Failed Emissions Test

Well I went for my rest today and failed miserably. The HC and CO were extremely high. The NO was passed. The guy doing the test seemed to think it was running rich. I'm thinking of just putting on a new high flow cat and trying again.
Any suggestions?

Transmission: sure does
Losing the 160 stat would help.....how does it run?

Got a bigger cam in it??

A new cat will eat some up, but it depends on how high is "extremely high"

It runs good, however I do have 23# injectors in it now. It still has the stock heads and cam. For the longest time it seems that I had a leaking injector which would make it smell extremely rich when started. This went on for a long time until I finally put new ones in. Could this have degraded the convertor over time?
Maybe I'll lower FP a bit and throw in a new convertor. Any recomendations on what brand?
Oh and here are the #'s on my test: HC limit ppm 68--my reading 128, CO% limit 0.38--my reading 1.62, NO ppm limit 751--my reading 656. At least I passed one part of it.

Engineboy, perthaps you could be of some assistance to me.

Today I whipped my T/A through our "AirCare", it passed easily on both HC and NO, (very low readings), but on the CO side, it reg'd 1.33% where as you are only allowed 1.34%, this is on the driving component of the test where they bring it up to 30mph. Close, huh?

The catalytic converter is brand new.. oh, and SO IS THE ENGINE.
355ci, CompXE262 (218/224,.460.470"), stock 882 heads, flattops (~8.8CR), Performer intake, stock QJet. Oh, no EGR. They don't pop your hood or enforce any visuals here on pre-86 cars, you just have to pass the sniffer.

Could this be because it only has 300miles on it, and needs to get worked in a little more? EGR woes? Cam too aggressive for the smog *****?

BTW: I just pulled my first full-throttle run, I couldn't wait any longer <evil grin>. With those 3.73's it really hauls *** . =)

Later,
Hype.

Hi Folks,
I had the same problem and replaced my CATS and the HC & CO fell like a rock. I purchased Random Cats for my car. I had them installed and went back with my for the third test. To my shock, I passed the emission test. My number went from 1.9262 to .2630 HC (limits 1.2 GPM) and CO that was over 20 on the second test went to 12.5936 (limits 20.0GPM). I have a 350 TPI, LT-4 Hot Cam, 1.6 RR, 24 lbs injector, Elbrock ported heads, Runners, ported base, etc. It is not stock but I passed with the new CATS. If you think you need new CAT, do it - you need to spend some money for a waiver anyway. I hope this helps
