port, or not to port

I received my 195 AFR's and have been consider porting them just a bit. I'm nervous. Kind of spendy heads. I was just going to clean up runners a little, just clean off the end mill grooves. I'm close to ordering the Procharger, and I want it to flow as good as it can. For those of you who have the same heads, did you port yours? Is it worth the time?

If there are obvious flaws in it then I'd say port it. I've never touched (nor seen AFRs IRL)... I couldnt imagine them needing much, if any clean up? Arent they CnC'd or something?

I would consult with AFR before I took any apprasive tool to those heads. They should be ready to go out of the box. That is one of the big advantages of paying for heads like that.

I say unless you really know what you are doing, the possibilities of hurting the velocity or such outweigh the possibilities of gains.

I agree, with the money you paid for that, it would be a shame to ruin nice pair of heads. Besides, if you want to practice you can get some from the junkyard for almost nothing.

They won't need much porting. Can you remove a few valves and post pics of the valve blowls? If there are big ridges left over from the steel valve seat insert machineing that haven't been smoothed into the port just under the valves, you can carefully smooth and blend this area.

If the valve guides are not contoured you can smooth and contour them a bit. Big enlarging is not recommended.

Some pics will tell the story.

A little bowl blending is all you'll want to mess with. AFR designed that guide boss to work with the port and bowl. You mess with it, kiss your swirl goodbye. Also you DON"T want to smooth out your intake runner. The grooves left by the mill and the rough finish keep the fuel from puddling and help wet flow.

Here's my stock AFR 195 street head flow #'s. Tested on our Superflow Bench @ 28 in/Hg.

.100 63.7
.200 128.5
.300 185.9
.400 226.7
.500 253.9
.550 252.7
.600 255.1

o yeah, you'll also want to disassemble them completely and clean them. One set I got for a customer came out of the box full of metal shavings from machining. Called them and they said it's normal While they're apart, take them to a machine shop and have the valves back cut and re-lapped. That'll pick on some flow and they'll seal better.

I dont have any pics. I have decided not to touch them. If I had a flow bench... Anyway, the small gain probaly will be overshadowed by the proharger. Thanks for the input.

Do you need more flow than out-of-the-box would provide?

I/e opening a set of heads to flow 280cfm on the intake, is kind of a waste of time and performance with a mellow cam and 9.5 CR

yeah but if your prepping for the future that is another story

I don't see these heads needing much work though. Best thing to do would be let the pros touch them up or leave as is. and for me I would leave them
