1987-89 Camaros
1987-89 Camaros
Hey...i dont know a whole lot about cars yet but i wanted to know are 1987-89 Camaros fast? I know stock the 2.8L has 135Hp and the 5.0L has 165Hp, but some people fix them up a lil. Im desperately seeking to get a Camaro but my parents wont let me get anything too fast!
Welcome Aboard!
Define "fast", please.
A Honda Civic with a 4-cylinder can probably do 95 if really pushed. A ThirdGen V-6 can probably do the same. I have a 1994 full-size rear drive four-door sedan that tops out at about 163MPH. "Fast" is usually controlled by the operator, not the make and model. Except for those recalled Toyotas that make themnselves go fast after hanging the throttles.
Among the other likely considerations is general safety. If having to choose between driving a Honda into a ThirdGen or driving a ThirdGen into a Honda, I'd take the latter ten times out of ten.
You can bolster your arguments if you like by searching the board archives. You can find examples of robustness, reliability, fuel mileage, and ease of repair. You can probably find further examples of just the opposite. It all comes back to the operator, maintenance, and use.
If you really need further convincing, you can report that I would volunteer a PROM for your ECM that will cut off fuel at whatever speed they desire - 65MPH, 75MPH, 85MPH, 255 MPH, whatever. It would take about four days with express shipping both ways, however. That should answer the "fast" question, whatever that is.

I wouldn't recommend a Camaro/Firebird/or a Mustang for someone who's young enough to have to ask their parents permission. I know how I was when I was a kid and I know these cars don't like rain, ice or snow. A girl I went to school with was killed when she was driving her b/f's firebird in the rain. Just like any car can be unsafe when driven unsafely some have characteristics that make them a handful if not driven carefully in wet conditions. I argued the same argument with my parents and lost. My advice take whatever they want to give you. Start saving money and start building. The time and money spent will be something you did and you'll respect your car and drive it likewise. I had my first 3 cars given to me and drove the holy **** out of them. I just don't see why parents would give their kids an LT-1, LS-1, or a 5.0 as a first car.

I bought my car in June of 92.I was a month shy of 16,paid cash out my own pocket for it,so my parents didn't throw too big of a fit. Here it is 13 years and 9 engines later,I've never wrecked it,and I still love it as much as I did in 92.I proposed to my wife in my Camaro, and know every nut and bolt like the back of my hand.I say if he can convince his parents to let him have one, even a v-6 car, great for him.Just respect it,especially in the rain.Don't even bother when it snows,it ain't gonna happen.

lol 9 engines? I rest my case. I agree though. Pay for it yourself. and don't get dumb and you'll be ok. find an escort for winter. I had an 83 Firebird with a 350 once. I parked it in the yard and got stuck in the yard when the dew sat on wet grass.

v6 camaros.. so so, not much faster than a typical *****. LG4 isnt much better than a 2.8, 3.1 is a tad better. The L-69 HO 305 is a decent engine paired with a 5 speed, then you have auto tpi 305s from 86, kinda slow, then the non peanut cam aut tpi 305 cars, pretty quick, then there are the 5 speed lb9s, which were close to the same performance as the quickest, L98. Then there are the SD L98s which are just a tad slower than Lt1s with the same gearing.
If you mean 'fast' by todays standard, the only ones that really hang are lb9 stick cars and L98s. If you want to mod a car to be fast, dont waste time with a 305 car, although there are some running fast like Nova, its alot harder than building a 350. Just get an L98 car with some good full exhaust, stall and bolt ons and run 13s all day long.
My parents trust me alot, my fist car was an L98 IROC, but im also not an idiot trying to showoff like most highschool do with a nice car.

Ok. I have a 1989 IROC Z28 with a 5.7 350 in it. Stock they are pretty fast (atleast for an older car) The IROC with the 5.7 in it is the fastest stock 3rd gen camaro you can get. They have about 220hp. The V6's i believe have around 140? and the 305 (5.0) has around 160? That is just a guess. But i do know any stock 3rd gen camaro is FAST but they are pretty peppy cars. Especially when you start adding mods

Ok,we've all shared our opinions, now where the hell is the kid that started this thread.?
As far as 9 engines go,only 2 of them scattered, the rest were a matter of getting bored, and learning how to make more power.
My poor Iroc has had everything from the original TPI 350,to a wicked little 283,(put togethor from leftovers just for kicks),a carbed 305 in lean times,a couple of 377's,a 348,a 421 that never made it out of the shop(long story),to my current 406.Tha t's not mentioning all of em',but my car and I have learned a lot togethor along the way!

I'd like to see a decently built 283 in an f body that would be cool and not many around that's done that. The guy I sold my 82 to put a stock 283 in it.
