tapping at certain times...still an exhaust leak?

Reently I've noticed a tapping, and I'm pretty sure it's an exhaust leak, but I had a question about when it hapens. When it's in park, if I rev, the tapping isn't as bad, almost unnoticable. When I put it in drive and start moving, the tapping gets a lot worse. Is this consistent with an exhaust leak or is it something else?

noise

Your other possibility is a cracked flexplate. They make the same noise and it can vary with rpm or load on the driveltrain.

as weird as this sounds might want to try to put some MMO or ATF into a vacuum line and let it slowly drink it up.

if you have an exhuast leak you will know it cause that stuff smokes bad even more so with the ATF.

when I tried it on my mazda it found every single exhuast leak I had... damn stuff made me give up counting the leaks too.

other then that drivetrain issue I would say.

by the way now is a good time to check the oil just to make sure

Hmmm.... that's an interesting trouble shooting tool I've not heard of before. Do you just stick (and leave it there) the vacuum tube into a small container of ATF?

on my mazda that is what I did. mainly just take the vacuum line and dip it in and then when that smoke starts comming it will come for a while. had it last while idling up to 30 min before.

but from what I understand the rotary doesn't hydrolock as easily so what you might want to try is instead of holding it in the ATF just take the vacuum line and dip it in and out and don't let the engine die.

just be forwarned. it smokes like crazy and can smoke for some time. but it works real well at finding every exhuast leak you have
