I have a chance at a free blown 305 longblock, opinions?
Alright, I was talking to a guy in my area and he is parting out his Trans Am because his 305 blew... something in the bottom end... he said I can take it for free.
I need a new tranny anyway, so it's a matter of buying a V6 or a V8 tranny...
Do I keep the V6? Or rebuild the 305?
The 305 is a crossfire injection one, I'm thinking LG4, supposedly a pretty ****ty engine, but it's still better than my LB8. Right now I'd do anything for an 8...
So... opinions? And please don't bash this post, I know I'm asking for it... I just want a good clean discussion.
Thanks!

I guess it all depends on how much money you are willing to spend on a rebuild. But why is the guy giving it away for free. Go ahead and take it worst comes to worst you don't rebuild it, but later down the road you can. If the motor makes any amount of decent HP after a rebuild, you'll have to rebuild the tranny.

A 305 is better than a v6 as far as power goes, you can make them pretty quick. The one thing I don't like is the crossfire injection; if you could get a different intake on it, that would be great. Would that be plausible?

FYI, eveyone has access to a free blown 305, I'd say look around you can probably pick up a running 305 for less than $500, which is more than likely alot cheaper than you will get that blown 305 rebuilt for. Also you don't know what's wrong with it yet, could be major, crank, block crack etc. I say skip it.

You'll probably spend more repairing a free blown-up 305 then you would if you went to the boneyard and bought a running 350, and just freshened it up a bit... although like the one post said, you could tear it down and see if it's really wasted or what, maybe it's not so bad (could be fixed with just a cracnk kit or something), at least you might learn something if you've never been inside an engine's crankcase before.
But if it really is "blown up" to where the pistons have to come out of the bore (spun rod bearing or broken rod or damaged piston), it's not a good way to go. Pass on it. The "core" for an engine swap is usually the least significant part of the total cost of the swap; If I was going to go to the trouble and expense of doing a swap like that, I'd aim a little higher than a minimum V8.

All kidding aside. Like the posts above me have stated, the blown 305 may have some major problems or minor problems. Whether it's worth the trouble of hauling it home and dismantling it is up to you. It may very well be a good find.
There's also the problem of the actual swap. Who knows all the little things that may need to be changed/altered, such as: exhaust, ecm, wiring, radiator, fuel line/pump, etc.
If the 305 is in need of a rebuild, it would probably be better to find/buy a rebuilt 350 or one that's already running. In the end, it's all up to you, and how much you are willing to invest(time, money, etc.). Whatever you decide; good luck.

buy the car before he parts it out. That way you've got a V8 car to start with. Buy a used/running 350 longblock (or get a cheap/free 305 longblock) and get it running. Way easier than trying to convert to a V8 from a V6 (legally).
Just my opinion on an easier way to a V8

no,
and one more point. Once you've posted in a thread with your sig...You don't have to post the sig with every successive post in that thread. Once is good enough.
It's not that it's so offensive, as it makes you look like an idiot. I don't like to see people making idiots of themselves unknowingly. Now you know.
sorry for the O.T. It's just been bugging me.

Anyway, thanks for the opinions guys, I'll just buy a V8 car down the road. If I decide it's worth the trouble, I'll pull it and see if I can sell it/part it out for a few bucks...

You're right, I'm not a moderator. I'll respect your opinions. I'm not telling you what to say or when to say it, I'm simply telling you how I feel about what you say and when you say it. That habbit is annoying and bad "board ettiquite."
