Help, Thermostat Problem? Begginer Here!
Ok, since i'm new at this, i think i just found out my overheating problem. I just saw in some website that if you change your thermostat to a cooler one, you need to make changes to your computer, or prom, or whatever. Remember, i'm new.Bare with me! Ok, i changed my thermostat to the 160 degrees one. And i think, not sure, that ever since then, my fan won't start. My car has heated up several times already. I need to be careful not to sit still for a while, cuz my temp will pop up! But when i start driving, it will go back down. Can that be the problem, that i put a 160 degree thermostat? To fix it do i just buy the original one back? What's the degrees on the original one? By the way, i checked the fan motor, it works, so that can't be the problem. I have a 92 Firbird 305 TBI. Thanx for any help guys!

replacing the thermostate doesn't control anything on the fans, in fact, the engine will heat up just as warm as before (unless ur on the highway) because the fans will turn on at the stock temps anyways, unless u get a fan switch. so a 160* therm. won't help cool down the engine unless u get the fans to turn on at a lower temp. ( i think stock is 225)
if u are having overheating problems, i recomend getting ur coolent system cleaned, and getting a HIGHER flowing thermostat. and depending on where u live, maybe put in a 180* thermostat, and getting a fan switch to kick on ur fans at a lower temp.

Well being that you already got the thermostat, go get a jet or a hypertech chip that uses it.
BTW, breathment, I'm lost how 180 temp would keep the engine cooler. Wouldn't 160 keep it more cool than 180? What actually is 160 and 180, the temp to turn on fans or to shut them off??

Is your fan coming on at all? It could be that your fan motor is toast, or the relay could be bad. The thermostat has no effect on what temp the fan comes on at. The fan is controlled by the temp sensor in the engine. So the fan will come on at a certain temperature (hypothetically, if everything works) no matter if the thermostat is opened or closed. ChevaLuva, the 160 and 180 temp ratings on a thermostat are the temperature that they open/close at. For example, below 180 the coolant will not circulate through the radiator since the stat is closed, it will just sit in the block. Above that temp the coolant will begin to circulate.
If you are having a problem with the car overheating in traffic but not on the highway then changing the stat won't fix the problem.
