head porting question....?

Hey, I have an '83 Berlinetta with a LG4 4-barrel. I was wondering if I should get the heads ported out, I dont have the money for new ones at the moment. The mods I have so far are headers, 3-inch exhaust, and a Hypertech chip. I'm hoping to install a new cam and maybe upgrade the whole valvetrain, so I'm planning heavy modding to this baby! Thanks for any help

Standard Abrasives www.sa-motorsports.com sells a kit of various emery tootsie rools, arbors, flap wheels, etc. for porting heads. It comes with excellent instructions, great for a first-timer. It costs about $40 for the full kit. I'd suggest you get one of those and do it yourself, it's a whole lot cheaper. The main thing to remeber is to proceed gently and carefully, you can't put metal back but you can always take more off.

On those heads the biggest gains are from cleaning up the bowl where the port approaches the valve on both intake and ehaust, and the "short side" radius on both valves. The exhaust side benefits from polishing, the intake side should be left rough (as-ground, not necessarily as-cast).

That a good idea to get them ported, you will most likely feel the difference.
