Apart from the obvious difference in shape, H beam rods are supposedly stronger, although rods are available in either style to handle just about any power level.

By design the H-beam should handle side loading better, so they are well suited to high RPM use.
The I-beams handle compression loads well and are often lighter in weight.

My old 469 engine had Scat I-beam rods. They were only rated for about 700 hp. My new Eagle H-beam rods are rated for about 1000 hp. More if I upgrade to the ARP2000 rod bolts.
Unless you're building an all out race engine, a good set of I-beam rods will work fine.
