Whoops, set the timing when the car was in park...

I set the timing when the car was in park, i was told to do it when it was in D so the engine is under some load, any truth to this? I set the timing to 8* BTDC, stock is 6*(L98) if i should've done it in D what do u think my base timing is at?

conventional wisdom would lead one to believe that the car would have to be stationary in order for you to set the base ignition timing. putting the car in drive, hence the words "under load", might cuase problems as you sit in the direct path of the soon to be moving vehicle. no intentions to flame you but i gotta say that question was best left to yourself. End of discussion-

I'm sorry man, no flames intended, but I just got done reading the "Common Repair Myths" post before this and I'm laughing my *** off right now at the thought of you running *** down the street after your car with a wrench in your hand. Hey, If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

Dosn't it depend on the specs. I mean if the manual says 8 degrees at 800RPM, then that would be park.
I think you would have problems if you where setting the timing at high idle say greater then a 1000RPMs.

I don't even think the wieghts would move any between 650 & 800 RPM's.

Hell, since we are flaming a little. Wouldn't a total timing measurment be better -- say 3000RPM under load.

Well, since we are flaming, whatareyathinkin? No weights and springs in a HEI for an L98. The EST module takes care of it all. -Matt-
