Gear Drive (vs) Double Roller
I have a SBC Built very nice with 472RWHP and it right now has a Cloyes Gear Drive for timing a little noisey but ok I was thinking of doing the Cloyes Double timing chain with Billit gears what do you all feel is better?

i have heard of people having problems with premature cam failure while running timing gear drives becuase of the harmonics from the crank being transfered up into the cam through the gears. because of this, i'll never run a gear drive.

Gear drives have a nice whine. I was going to put one in my L98 but after talking to a friend of mine who builds engines, he said anything thats driven regularly shouldnt have one - the harmonics created are horrible for the engine.

Ive never heard of bad harmonics from a gear drive ruining engine components. I have however seen proof that a gear drive can eat as much as 10hp.
yea i heard that too, also its more friction and heats up your oil more. And shouldn't be used with a computer controlled vehicle equiped with a knock sensor because it plays mind games with it. There is no real benefit for using them, so i dunno why people get them. The sound really isn't that sweet either...if you want your car to whine, buy a supercharger...otherwise your just bluffin..
thats my 2 cents

A mag. tested gear drives, chains and belt drives a while back, all on the same engine and I think there was less than 1 hp difference between them, they even tested advancing and retarding the timing with the adjustable belt drive and found almost no difference. I like the true double roller myself.

I currently have a single idler gear drive. Motor runs fine, haven't done any gear drive vs. chain or whatnot (can't afford a belt). Can't say anything about the whine as I can't hear it versus the exhaust.

My brother and I put one in a carbed L98 we installed in his 86 Regal, I thought it sounded nice. Never had a problem with it. Did it add power? Of course not, at least not in a stock L98. Did it sound mean along with the headers and dual exhaust? Of course it did!!
I am planning on putting one in my car too. I had one in it but removed it before I installed the engine since I thought I was going to be using the computer. But the computer is gone now.
Hmmmm... Blower vs. gear drive. If its a cruizer like mine I will go for the gear drive. I just want a nice cruizer that can get into the 13's, shouldn't need a huffer for that.
