fuel problem

car wont start, i can hear the fuel pump running and i smell gas under the hood when cranking, but when i press down on the schrader valve nothing at all comes out. i turn the key about a hundred times back and fourth(can hear fuel pump running) and still nothing. sometimes the fuel pump will keep running about 20sec after turning the key off. checked for leaks and cant find any.

any ideas?

buy and install a fuel pressure gauge, see if you have enough fuel pressure, if not, get a new fuel pump. Make sure you're getting spark. Check fuses. Thats where i would start.

The first thing to check on a no start case is the fuel pressure. Buy yourself a good fuel pressure gauge, install it, and have someone turn the engine over while you read the fuel pressure.
I have a fuel pressure gauge installed full time under the hood.

You should read about 43.5 psi at the fuel rail with the vacuum line removed and plugged. This is the vacuum line between the plenum and the fuel pressure regulator.

have spark, checked all fuses everything ok. could a faulty fuel pump relay cause the pump to still run but, not get enough pressure to start?

a relay wouldn't. but a bad electrical connection might. I kind of doubt it though since you can hear the fuel pump.

yeah i def have the same problem on a 91 firebird v6. I hear the fuel pump. Took the top manifold off checked the fuel lines all the way to the manifold everything seem s in order and stumped. Car was running last night i had it on for 45 min and now i started it this morning and it started and then just pupped out and wouldnt turn back on. At first it sounded like the battery cause my volt meter was really low but it not it bc there a new one in now and still doing the same thing. Checked all fuses to the fuel pump and there all fine. Im planning on getting a new motor anyway i just need more time with this motor till im ready. Anyone got any ideas i d really appreciate it cause im outta ideas and so are 3 others here. I m probably gonna feel stupid when i find out what it is but oh well.

i like summitracing.com for car parts like gauges. A parts store should have fuel gauges also. Check out jegs.com also.
