smog pump

In Virginia there is no emissions test to pass. They look at the motor and make sure a cat is installed.t. A friend told me I should get rid of smog pump. What does it do and will it hurt anything. Also what else can I trash.

Yeah, I give the place all my vehicle and a couple of work vans so he might not notice. What did not having it on do for you.

your friend thinks getting rid of the smog pump will free up some horsepower

but it won't

pull one at a junkyard and spin it... little to no resistance... all it does is push air with those dinky fins on the back of it.

pulling it will do nothing for you except clean up the engine bay a little bit.

not even close to being worth it if there is even a small chance of failing smog because of it.

alot of people actually have problems after they pull them, the prom is tuned for that air injection, so sometimes it puts it off enough to run like crap if the tune was already fringing the limitations of the program.

Yes, because it has a "computer command carburetor".

I'll second the smog pump power thing. I pulled the belt off mine between race weeks, from the run data you wouldn't be able to tell when I pulled it. However, I went to put the belt back on a week later and found out the pump had seized up. If you take the belt off, cap off the lines to the exhaust system as well. Best thing, though, is to just leave it on.

in michigan we don't have any e-tests, nothing. my smog pump just started makeing a whining/screeching noise so i was just gonna remove it. wierd thing is on my exhaust manifolds their just normal manifolds nothing for the smog pump. since i have a/c will my stock belt be ok to still use if i remove the pump?

That's a different topic. Try serpentine smog pump delete.

Whats weird is that canadian models did not come with smog pumps. I remember a gentleman who had purchased one in canada and had a heck of a time getting it to pass visual since it didnt have a pump here in the states. I think its on an old post or something.

If it's the same guy I'm thinking about, he had a big problem just getting it across the border. He finally discovered a loophole for 20-year-&-older cars don't need to comply with US emissions when imported.

Makes one wonder why 20-year-&-older US-deliverd cars need to comply with US emissions...

they probably figure if it's that new then it has no excuse to not be running pretty clean.

i hate the hassle of smog... but i understand, the crap is doing a serious number on the enviroment these days with the massive amount of auto's in the world.

but i don't think they should do visuals.... just the sniffer test. if it spits clean out the backside, then who cares how they get it to run that clean? as long as it does, there should be no problem.

There's a reason for visual & sniffer, that being that sniffer doesn't cover all of the "real" requirements. The tests to cover everything would be extremely expensive. Be thankful that visual is all they do.

I still say there's a disconnect between what the Feds allow in the country and what is required to be tested locally based on age. The good news in my case is there's a way around it at age 25.
