speedometer blues...

Lately I have been having a problem with my speedometer.

First a little history. My orignal cable, well maybe not original, but the one that was in it when I bought it broke about 2 years ago.

I bought a replacement, but my dumbass didn't lube the cable. So about a month ago, I noticed my speedometer jumping around pretty bad and ticking. When it ticks it jumped about 10 mph. I knew it was going out soon. And sure enough it did. About a week ago.

Went and bought a new cable, lubed it this time, and instead of threading in the new housing that came with it, I just pushed it through the existing housing. Made it much easier to replace. Got everything all hooked up again. Speedo works much better, no more jumping.

But, it still ticks. But now it doesn't jump as far when it ticks, only like a mph or two. And then the other day, it was like 5 degrees outside, car was fairly cold, got on the highway, and at about 45mph my speedometer made the most *** awful grinding noise, and the needle was floating around 20mph past what it should have been at. Slowed down below 30 and it stopped, and after everything got all warmed up, the grinding nose stopped, and the speedo started acting normal again. Except for the ticking.

Cable is brand new and lubed up. Is the ticking and awful grinding because of a failing speedo? I wouldn't think it would be the gear at the tranny because it sounded like it was coming from right behind the dashboard.

Anyone else have experience with a speedo that has died?

More than one.

Your cable housing could have been damaged by the broken cable. You may have also loaded the speedometer bearing in a way not intended.

I'd replace the speedo cable housing immediately. The speedometer itself may need rebuild or replacement itself.

What exactly is the speedo head? Is that the speedometer itself or some other part of it?

Also, I don't know if it's related or not, but my trip odometer hasn't worked in like long time.

edit.. oh and 84L69TA, do you have enough cars man? lol, just noticed your sig...

The speedo head is part of the speedo itself. BTW, I also have 6 cars that arent in my sig.

Im having this same exact problem. It started jumping around very bad , making a noise like a stripped out gear and would be fine under 30mph. Well it finally quit. Cable was fine and found that the clip holding the gear on the output shaft of the tranny came off. Got that squared away and now it has started again within 50 miles of fixing it. Guess ill pull the speedo gear housing and see what it looks like in there.
