dum timing qustion

im not sure but i thought when u rev the engine that the timing advances it self? when i was looking at my timming with a timing gun i had it at 4* BTDC, i think thats what it is any way, this is what it looked like

(sory look at the second post for the picture)

Any way when i rev it from idle it goes from 4* before to 2*before and almost 0*,(so wouldnt that be retarding it self?), i thought it was suposed to go the other way, from 4* Before to 6* before or soemthing like that.

Yeah, the timing should advance. In my 91 the timing at idle is like 20 BTDC. Base timing is 6.

whats the diffrence between the 20 BTDC and the 6* base timing? and how do u check both?

also i did have it at 6* but i had to retard it to 4* because i was geting surging at crusing speeds from it being to lean and when i retarted it it was fine

You have some other kind of problem then. The computer automatically advances your timing up from your base timing. Even still, base timing of 6 BTDC is stock for TPI. You could theoretically advance that to about 12 without a problem.

your knock sensor retards the timing for you, perhaps it's out of whack? or being triggered somehow?
or it's a problem in the meatware. Is that a dialback timing light?

im not sure what a dial back is...i have nothing fancy it just blinks the light thats all and i jsut put a new sensor in, it did it before and after, and what do u mean by meatware? also i have loud exhaust and a cut out could that cause it? and im not sure if its touching anypart of the chasi or not

meatware is YOU. ie you did something wrong. I have no idea how you could have caused that, unless you were screwing with a dialback timing light.

I have no more ideas as to why it would do that. does the car run poorly?

try unplugging the computer control gizmo plug on it, then see what the base idle speed is, and if it changes at all when you rev it (it shouldn't).

it runs pretty good it is slightly ruf at idle but probably because its a modifyed engine the only thing i had wrong was when i had it set at 6* BTDC i would get surging at crusing speeds so i retarded it to 4 and it fixed the problem, could a bad tps cause it? or o2 sensor? also does it matter that when im looking at the timing when its retarding when i rev it that the EST wire is disconected? or mabey somethign is wrong with my vacum?
