Haynes manuals suck!!

alright, im pretty sure I have to replace my EGR valve, but I just want to make sure of one thing. My haynes manual says I need atleast 10 inches of vacuum on the engine side of my EGR solenoid.... and thats all it says. wtf does that mean?

The auto parts store Haynes and Chilton manuals suck. A 2004 Chev manual still shows the old large cap HEI distributor and old 10SI alternator. They're not very up to date.

They also only give you enough information to be dangerous. Most of the time, information I need for diagnostics is never in these manuals. These manuals are for the basic back yard mechanic who wants to know how to change simple parts.

At work we use Alldata for automotive information. Mitchell on Demand is another good source.

In other words, the engine vacuum going to your EGR solenoid needs to be at least 10 inches. Pull the line at the EGR valve solenoid and hook a vacuum gauge up to it, it should read at least 10 in hg's (inches of Mercury, the common unit for vacuum)

IIRC, get a vacuum pump....let the car idle, hook the vacuum pump up to the EGR valve vacuum line....and slowly pump it and raise the vacuum. Once you hit the threshhold where it's designed to open, the motor should begin to stumble. If it doesn't, your valve isn't working properly

Haynes manuals

I have to agree, the Haynes manuals that areprinted recently are crappy.....if you can find one of the earlier manuals, bright red cover...it has a lot more information in it and is much better......they used to be decent books......

The Haynes books did help me re-build a rear brake caliper on my T/A but I think that is far as I will trust one of those pamphletes...I went on e-bay and for $15.50 I purchased a Pontiac Dealership shop manual for the '86 Firebird...It's like the bible to me!!!!!!!

I purchased Two (2) shop manuals for my son's '82 Z-28. I also got them for $10 +/- each (also on e-bay) ABSOLUTELY NOTHING compares to a shop manual.!!!

Fortunately, the ThirdGen Manuals are relatively easy to find on e-bay and they are also rather cheap. You may not be lucky enough to find one for $10 but should have no problem at $20+/-. Get one now before they get pricey.

I've yet to find one for my SecondGen ('78 T/A) for less than $75! There are some folks asking a ridiculous prices for them $90+++.

Get an e-bay search going and get your book now.... YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!!!

Sincerely,
Kurt
