How much for a starter?
How much for a starter?
Hi, I took my car to the shop because it was having trouble starting. They told me a starter would cost 300 dollars. I have a 1994 Z28 Camaro. Cant I find a starter somewhere for $100 or less?

Well, a 1994 Camaro would be a 4th generation model, not 3rd.
You might try asking on LS1LT1.com - Powered by vBulletin , or looking it up on www.partsamerica.com .

Wow, I'd really hope you can get one for cheaper, seeing as ACDelco starters for 3rd gens only cost 15$
Just go to autozone.com and check to see how much it'd run you.

300$ installed? or 300$ for the starter itself?
if its 300 for the starter itself,
i think ur getting ripped off.
i bought brand new starter(WITH solenoid)
for 140bux.
ofcourse thats for a 3rd gen but shouldnt be much of a difference
in price caz its still a same car,
ur not comparing a honda with a jaguar
so shouldnt be that much difference in price.
try local auto store, they usually have it.

A brand new LT1 starter is 180.00 at Advance auto. Alldata shows 1.4 hours to replace. At 75.00 an hour your right in your quote after tax and such.

Please fill me in on the labor and cost for the starter.

That's just the black book time allotment for it. They say 6 hours to do a timing chain I think... Must be lazy mechanics
But yea, a $15 starter is a pipe dream. $150 or so is about right. Labor to have some joker do it for you, yea, $300 is pretty normal.

Can you use a fourth gen starter on a third gen? I was going to swap one because the 4th gen is smaller and hopefully will not get heat soak...

I'm using a Hitachi starter, quite small and direct drive with 160 ft lbs of torque. Gained probably an inch of space between the header and starter body. Was using a napa brand gear reduction starter, had too many problems with them not working right. This new one is nice, comes with it's own starter bolts and can be clocked very easy. I'll see if I can get a part number tomorrow if you're interested.

Well chalk that up to another american dream then. If I called up my local autoparts stores (in canada), I can guarantee you I couldn't walk in and out with a new starter in hand, for under a $100. For my '82 Trans-am, standard, run of the mill SBC.
