lots of problems
I've recently installed an LO5 and 700r4 from an '87 van into my '92 RS. I've been trying to work all the bugs out, but so far I'm not having much luck.
here's the main problems I need help with:
overheating: highway and idling
transmission not shifting right
engine stalls and idles rough occasionally
I have the fan hooked to a toggle switch so I can run it whenever I want. The thermostat works. The water pump and radiator are in good working order. According to the manual, the only other things in the book that should cause overheating are timing. I don't have a timing light so I didn't check that. My exhuast is sawed off about 5 inches behing the cat (rusted through and broke so I cut it off to keep it from dragging). When I run a jumper wire on the ADL thing the only code I get is for the VSS (which I installed a toggle switch to override the speed limiter, although I obviously installed it wrong)
The code for lean exhaust or whatever doesn't flash. It takes probably 5 to 10 minutes of idling to reach about 220 degrees or so. For a while I was wondering if the temp gage was wrong.
The transmission shifts all crazy and stuff, when it even shifts at all. Sometimes it doesn't even feel like it shifts to all 4 gears and it acts like it's slipping sometimes. I adjusted the tv cable according to the manual and the trans. fluid is at the proper level. I filled the torque converter up before I bolted up the trans. too.
Sometimes when I apply the brakes the engine stalls out and dies. It starts up just fine though. At certain rpms with the car in park it sounds really bad, like it's not hitting on all cylinders or something. At regular idle it usually sounds just fine.
The engine and transmission ran just fine when it was in the van. It didn't overheat, it shifted great, it idled good, etc.
Alot of these problems (and some other ones) existed with my old LO3/700r4, that's why I figured everything would be solved by replacing them.
Could the hackjob exhaust be the main culprit for the overheating and stuff? Is there anything else I can do to make the transmission shift right, etc.? Could there be something wrong with the harness or brain or something?
I swapped in 350 the ecm/prom? The whole shiny metal box from the van, whatever it's called.
I'm pretty well lost here people.
