my car keeps eating distrubtor gears....
well this is on its 2nd disturbtor gear, stock hydr roller cam, and stock distrubtor.
stock intake manifold, all stock motor. can a cam bearing cause this?
the gears on the camshaft itself looks pretty good, what could the cause of this be?

wrong dist gear or the cam walking back n forth... those would be my guesses.

agreed, cam walk would do it....high volume or high pressure oil pump could cause it too. Roller cam cars had a special melonized gear, be sure your using the correct one. One other thing I have personally ran into is a bent dizzy shaft, rotor was scraping the inside of the cap and it eventually ate just a few teeth.
Are all the teeth sharp or are just a few gone?

Both of the above posts are right on. First guess sounds like Cam walk. Not having the correct melonized gear would be second. In taking a guess it sounds as if your gear just went out. If that is the case it would be cam walk.

well.. ok relieved tension on the lifters all rockers are completely loose so there is no load on the cam and pryed on the back of the cam with a pry bar and it is tight as cam be no play/walk at all...
the teeth look really good on the cam itself and in my research i found that gm used an iron gear for their stock hyd roller cams. so it doesnt matter weather the distrubtor gear itself is melonized. only aftermarket billet hyd roller cams require a bronze distrubtor gear.
as far as the distrubtor gears it chews them to nothing the first one no gears were left causing the distrubtor to not even turn.
now heres the kicker it only eats 3/4 the way up going from the bottom of the gear tword the cap.
now i ran the part number for the distrubtor itslef and it is interchangeable with my orignal dizzy....more in detail the first distrubtor gear it ate was a msd distrubtor stock replacement , the second one was a u pull it yard dizzy the gears are not gone yet but you can see its eating away the dizzy gears.

Oh man I member a similar post not long ago with the same problem. But the problem/fixes escapes me. But they are suppose to eat up the dizzy gear when it happens, easier to change it them a cam.
