ah man what did i do?!
tuned it up.i musta knocked the timing out alot cuz it runs like $hit and it dont have power.the tuneup consisted of plugs wires dist. cap and rotor.we put the firing order correct.but is there anyway that i could have moved the distributer or cap to knock it out? it will idle a little rough, and when i put it in gear,it backfires a couple times.then as im driving at o say around 20 mph and hit the gas a little bit and let off i get another backfire.but if i drive around 55 and let off or even downshift it wont backfire.....im really tired of pissing with it and would like to know how to fix it once and for all.this same car is for sale.and now i dont wanna sell it at all because of the way its running.im bout to jus say F it and build my 355.

its been checked and rechecked.on the distributer the 1 8 should be facing towards the front of the engine correct?the rotor is on and the cap is tight.dist. is in the same spot as when i removed the cap and rotor.should i loosen the hold down and try to turn it a little? it is running retarded i belive so if i were to advance it a tad would that help?

firing order
ok, i'll get your firing order straight in case you missed something. Lets say you're in front of the car. Take the two front connectors of the distribuor cap the one on your right is 1, now going clockwise you have 8,4,3,6,5,7,2 and back to 1. As for the cylinders, from front to back, your right set is 1,3,5,7(odd) and your left set is (2,4,6,8) .
Make sure you have that right and make sure all your connectors, wires and plugs are good and without defects. I had a brand new wire that turned out to be defective on my saturn 4 years ago which caused me much time and pain.
If after all that, you still have probs, then i think someone else here will have to help you out, lol/

No you SHOULD NOT **** on the timing. You DID NOT change it somehow by changing the cap and rotor. If the dist is bolted down tight, then it's right where it has always been.
Twiddling on the dist will NOT fix a backfiring and missing type of problem. Ever. All you'll accomplish is to create yourself yet another improperly done bit of work that you'll then also have to go back and undo once you find and fix the crossed plug wires.
The problem you have is created by some of the cylinders not getting their spark at the right point in their cycle. Instead, one is getting its spark when its exhaust valve is open, and another is getting its spark when its intake valve is open. And the reason is, the plug wires are going to the wrong ones.
You clearly and unmistakably have 2 spark plug wires reversed.
Leave the "timing" alone, and go back and REALLY check your work, instead of just assuring us that you've already done so and that it's right.
Because no matter how much you insist, the problem is still going to turn out to be 2 (or possibly more, but probably not) swapped plug wires.
I'm betting that the 2 wires you'll find exchanged will be the #5 & #7.

nope haha it was the 2 and 4 that was switched.wow.thats the last time i let my friend help me on that.it was a easy mistake to make tho.if you didnt trace the wire to the plug it looked like the 2 was the 2 but was really the 4.runs and idles alot better now.but with the 148k htats on it you think its time for a new timing chain too.i do....but i got a problem with the take off,it almost dies whenever i nail it,its got a open element and all the vaccums are plugged that should be.is there a senser i should look at for this problem?i can barely do a burnout anymore,it will bog down to like 500 then after i let off a couple times and floor it it jumps to like 2500 and burns em good.any help?

throttle position sensor, and maybe a tranny fluid and filter change would help too.
