The chain is not adjustable.

What are you really trying to do here? That is, don't start out talking about killing the alligators, or even about draining the swamp; tell us about the road you're trying to build.

You've side bar shows 2 cars, which one is the one you're working on?
Is this just checking the timing, or replacing the chain?

sorry guys. i'm working on the trans am. project car. has just over 100,000 miles on it. in the spring i want to replace the chain with the 2 gears and check the timing. i've heard everyone talk about setting the chain 0 degrees or 6 degrees. whatever the car requires it to be set at.

sorry for lack on knowledge here. i will have a mechanic friend help just asking questions so i have some idea of what to do when the time comes.

plus i bought the car so i can just learn how to do certain things and understand how my car runs.

the 1986 trans am has a v8 TPI fuel injected 5.0 305 engine

That's ignition timing; doesn't really have anything to do with the timing chain.

The timing chain is driven by a gear on the crankshaft, and the chain drives a gear on the cam. Another gear on the cam, at the opposite end, drives the distributor. When you hear people talking about "timing", that's the setting of the distributor, such that the spark occurs at whatever relation to the position of the crank. Usually a few degrees before the piston reaches the exact top of its cycle as the crank turns.

As far as the chain, you just put it on, where it goes; it only goes in one place; and that's that. No adjustment.
