Anyone made a fuel pump access?
Anyone made a fuel pump access?
Hello this is my first post. I just bought my 1991 Z28 5.7 and of course a fuel pump is needed.....There is a custom exhaust on this car which is welded. I am a mechanic and when i get home from working on cars all day I dont really feel the need to do the major 3.8 labor required for remove and replace. The 4th gen Camaro page has a nice illustration and was wondering if anyone made one for the 3rd ? I am fully aware that the fuel sending unit has lengthy lines going to the driver side. I climbed underneath and the rust in the eye and cussing over the exhaust work doesnt look as appealing...any help?

Yes its been done, and I highly recommend against it. You're cutting up a major part of the floor back there. Others will disagree. Its your call.

Re: Anyone made a fuel pump access?
I would reccomend against it unless you have
the skill and equipment to do it clean and correctly..
Ive seen some nice jobs and some horrid hacked
up-"I cant belive he did that"-jobs.
I found it not that difficult to take the time to drop
the tank and do it correctly..
Ive also heard from people after cutting the hole,
had a hard time getting the pump out & ended up
destroying the sender/or hardlines. Use caution..
I did a pump swap on my car, and I did it the
right way..(drop the tank/axle) ONLY to find the
previous owner cut a hole in the trunk..
I was ticked off
Luckly he did a nice job, and I hinged it with a
access door, I need to weatherstrip it later on.

Re: Anyone made a fuel pump access?
I am curious how big the cutout was made. It seems it would quite large. And was it a "L" shape cutout? There is no way that it would be visible when its complete. Once properly sheetmetaled over . The thing is I paid $500 for this car and its sat for a long time without being driven , i had it running but not nearly enough fuel pressure. I want to do this at home and not tow it here to work...call me lazy..lol

Re: Anyone made a fuel pump access?
I did it on my convertible, but like others said, you have to do it right. I used a drill to start the corners. Then I used some aviation shears to cut the sheetmetal. The cut is in rectangular shape. Sorry but I dont have picutes. The cut is about 6 x15 inches or so. Just enoght for the sending unit to come out and to cut the lines. After I got the Walbro pump installed, I used rubber fuel lines and doble clamps on each end, and I also safety wired the screws on the clamps. I used stainless steel to make the "repair". Also I used a sealant that I use at work to cover the edges where the cut was made to prevent corrosion. After that I drilled some holes and installed the access panel with some rivets. And applied some more sealant around the panel. Some people disagree with this procedure, I do sheetmetal on airplanes at work, and I used the procedure that we use on airliners.

Hey Jetblast..I too am a aircraft guy..I was a Crew Chief on F-15 fighters in the Air Force for 8 years, the fabrication wont be an issue. And in reference
to SpitotRs305's comment ...I wasnt asking you to get anywhere near my Butt....Go back and watch Top Designer or Shear Expressions .I was just curious if there was a template or pictures for reference as far as exact dimensions. Learn from others mistakes...4thgen.org has a step by step tutorial with pics...was just wondering if we had one like it here . I'll do it without the reference...but one would help.

So save your frowns for someone who really cares.

Re: Anyone made a fuel pump access?
wow you sure told me a ASE "mechanic" and a crew chief for F-15s for 8 years, hey let me guess the FBI wanted you to but you turned them down to pull wrenchs for the rest of your life...
if you were such a great mechanic..as you say then droping the rear end wouldnt be a problem... or if you are such a great fabricator you wouldnt need plans and pictures and drawings you could just do it...
but oh yeah yours is faster... you sure told me

Yeah I have accomplished probably more in life already at 34 than you may have. I was in Desert Storm, Japan,Austrailia, and best of all Panama City Florida. Didnt quite get the FBI wanting me however.I am a ASE mechanic and specialize in transmission rebuilding, I have a A&P license and tinker with my Cessna....Just dont feel like fighting the rust monster underneath...Sorry for sounding like a @ss in the earlier post. Information never hurts even if I wear a patch on my arm.

And I know a crew chief on 90% of AF airplanes is a glorified gas station attendant who call the specialist to when the big work needs done.
The advice is do not P**s anyone off or you might never get any info or good info. There are a whole lot of people who know a ton of stuff more than any one person could dream of knowing.
When it comes to our third gens our accomplishments mean nothing to anyone but ourselves.
I am not intending to start a P**sing match so I will climb off my soapbox now.
That's the one thing that upset me the most when I remove the tank to change my FP from TBI the MPFI and put the tank on the ground look up and see a hole in the floor where an access had been cut by a previous owner. Whether is is a $500 car or a $5000 car if you have pride in what you have and how you do it, do NOT short cut. Do it right, even if it means more work and you get dirtier. That's what makes working on these third gens FUN.
Re: Anyone made a fuel pump access?
As I recall Desert storm ended in Feb of 91 which means you had to join the AF at 17 to have enough time to get through basic, tech school. Just a word of friendly advice from and ASE Master Tech (12 Years) and an Aircraft tech (B52, KC135, F4, F101, E3, F16 and currently C130 who was in Desert storm in late 90, Iraqi Freedom deployed 4 different times to Iraq and Afganistan and been in more places that you and me both have fingers and toes.

1. I turn 35 next week...(uh oh..now your foot begins to enter your mouth)
2. Graduated in 1990 and in basic training (Lackland) 3 days after graduation
(uh ohhh ..the crowd is in awe)
3. After completion of Basic and Tech School (Sheppard ) I was assigned to the 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron upon arrival I was assigned the hot pits unit at Dhaharan. If you dont know what hot pits are , its like a quick stop for weapons reloading and fueling of aircraft, we shut down the #1 engine and climb under and pump fuel. You being the F-16 guy, you arent familiar with that because you only have enough motors to be a "Lawn Dart" (uh oh i know crew chief lingo too)
4. Now your AFSC ranges you from SAC aircraft (back in the day terminology) to tactical aircraft. B-52s arent in service except to look pretty at BarksDale AFB Louisiana(or Grissom). F-4s and 101s look great with there tails painted Orange for shooting targets at Tyndall AFB. Drones worked on by Civilians....which now brings you too C-130s ...what a hunk of junk ..not even a C-130 gunship how pathetic. So now youve showed your old age Old timer.
5. Feb 27th President Bush Ordered Cease fire...March 3 1991 was formal cease fire for Desert Storm by the way.....Geez for someone stationed over there you should know
6. Glorified Gas station attendant or not ..I served my Country with Dignity and Honor...Even though you attack me from your own soapbox I still appreciate your service as well!

I have to apologize. I admit I should have been more knowledgable about your history before I said my thoughts.
