Idles higher in gear than out??

Idles higher in gear than out??
My car seems to idle higher when it is in gear (around 850rpms) When I put it in park after about 20 seconds it drops down and idles nice at about 600 rpms. How come it is downing this? Shouldn't it be the other way around?
