Gas Tank Hot

Ok, Drove the car hard tonight and the little relief valve behind the rear end hissed for good 20 seconds once I shut the car off.

When I went feeling around, the tank was really hot, the heat shield was equally hot and than one of the panhard bars was really hot. The rear end was really HOT too. Now, the heat shield usually sits over the muffler and than when it goes towards the rear end there is nothing protecting the tank.

Now the Tank was hot but I could still touch it and hold my hand there, but it wasn't too pleasant. The rear end I could barely hold my hand on. (this was 15 minutes after I shut the car off).
I have a new charcoal canister, new purge, new vacum diverter thing right before the canister, new relief valve in the rear. Exhaust wrapped the muffler and neighboring pipes. Still no avail. It builds soo much pressure that it vents it out of the ufo vent in the back.

I am starting to wonder if the rear ends heat is soaking the tank up. Also, the panhard bar was cool on the edges but hot in the middle and it was the one right next to the tank.
At this point I think the exhaust and the rear end both are heating up the tank. Its just very weird that the rear end could get that hot to affect the tank.
I need some thoughts on what could make the tank run so hot, and if there is a possiblity that something hot might be touching the lines somewhere and if that could make it run that hot.??

Re: Gas Tank Hot

The pumpkin on the rear is what the heat is coming from I would bet. Very first thing I would do is take off the rear cover and see if you have any metal shavings in fluid. Install fresh fluid. Take pics of the teeth. There is a chance that something broke back there and is making a lot of rubbing. The rear can get really really heat soaked even when everything is fine, so I bet if something is a little off, it is due to that. Worst case scenario is you get another rear from a junkyard or go to a 4th gen rear. If $ permits, just screw it and buy a Moser 12 bolt.

Good luck
