What are standard problems?

Are our motors prone to any problems?
Stuff that goes bad or poor oil circulation or any thing just curious.

The motors themselves are pretty bulletproof.

Re: What are standard problems?

The only "notorious" kinda problem the SBC has is oil leaks... because all the covers etc are made from stamped steel, oil leaks are pretty common from the valve covers, timing cover, and oil pan rail. These are very minor issues though, and can easily be corrected.

The valve stem seals going bad with the higher lift cam in the performance motors seems to be a recurring problem. The TPI motors have to have the throttle body cleaned periodically (every 15 years or so) or the "surging Idle" happens.
The AIR pump should be replaced before it hits 20 years old.
If the coolant in a 3rd gen has never been changed, you can expect the heater core to spring a leak.
The headlights on any Firebird should not be expected to raise after 15 years without being rebuilt. These issues have been covered extensively in numerous post thru the years .
Is this kinda what you were asking?

Ya, I was just curious to see what would be going bad soon and what I should keep an eye out for.

The grease in the bearings dries out over the years and it will start rattling...
right before it locks up.
If it's on a serpentine setup, it then becomes "tow-truck" time ...
They're not very expensive or hard to replace.

Re: What are standard problems?

If you are discussing the SBC in particular, yes there have been some problems with it. Core shift and lifter bores improperly bored being two that quickly spring to mind. Getting a block that cant go .030 over or eats cams sucks. The RMS has been the plauge forever. The one piece likes to leak too. But they run good enough to make you overlook all that.
