electric fuel pump question

i have gone through two holly blue pumps in less than 20 miles and 1 pass at the strip, i do not have the return line hooked up, i originally had a mechanical pump and when i swapped it over to the electric, i just plugged the return line off. could this be causing my pumps to fail? i have the pressure set at 7psi but when the pump runs for a little, the pressure keeps building and i have to shut it off. any ideas?

Re: electric fuel pump question

Do you have debris in the tank?

Why not hook up the pump properly, and use a Fuel Pressure Regulator with return? It would have to be better for the pump.

Re: electric fuel pump question

i have a regulator hooked up and the pressure at 7psi, just trying to figure out if a return line is necessary, i have seen many cars that the return is plugged off, but now i keep burning up pumps and thought maybe a return would help, and if i had dirt in the fuel, i would think my filter would catch it and i would loose fuel pressure, it was working fine then all of a sudden took a sh*t, after a while it would turn back on and sound like crap, but was able to run the car long enough to get it back on the trailer

Re: electric fuel pump question

most electric pumps require a return to keep the pump from over heating. with no return the pump cavitates holding a constant pressure in the line with minimal fuel movement. with the return fuel is constantly running from the tank through the pump then back into the tank the constant flow keeps the pump cool.
