Clearancing is usually required, but it's nothing serious.
What work are you getting done for that price?

Thats not "TERRIBLE" IF, This is a HIGHLY COMPETENT machine shop that is using Torque plates when boring and honing.

If they are doing the machining and assembly, then that isn't too bad. Slightly high, but not outrageous.

Re: machining for a 383
It is meaningless to post a price like that, without telling what's included.
Does it include:
balancing?
torque plates?
zero-decking?
clearancing?
cleaning?
align-honing?
truing the rods?
new rod bolts?
......?
If you can't tell us things like that, all of which are the DIFFERENCE between "we'll beat anybody's price to rebuild a motor" and a motor that WINS and LASTS, then we have no clue what's in the that price; and consequently, whether it's a good deal or not.
Mcahine work is one of those things like nuclear power plants: it should NEVER be bought from the low bidder.
You get, AT BEST, what you pay for. So if you pay the least, you get ... I'll let you figure that out. Not that paying more is any guarantee of getting more; but setting about your project determined to pay the least, pretty much guarantees you'll get .... what you just figured out.
Frankly, that price sounds WAY WAY LOW to me, for complete machining, clearancing, and assembly; at least, for anything beyond a slap-it-together "recon" type of thing to compete with VatoZone or whatever. I don't know what your goals are, but I'd be HIGHLY suspicious of the finished product at that price. Machine work costs by the hour, basically: a good machinist charges more by the hour than a beginner or a sloppy one, and attention to detail takes more hours. More hours x more $ per hour = more $$$$$. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Re: machining for a 383
to get my machine work done to my 383 and the assembly was $1250 that was from a reputable shop. They bored with tq plates, honed, clearanced for the stroker crank, put restrictors in the water passages, and did a "street" fill with hardblok. you can knock off a good 150-200 for those 2 things. I also paid for freeze plugs, oil galley plugs and cam bearings, and gaskets, everything else was supplied by me. So you're in the right neighborhood. I know i paid a little more than most, but it was done right and i didnt have to worry about it coming apart.
