explain the Heater Control Vacuum Tank and how it works

Do we really need this tank hooked up for the heat to work right? I broke mine and never reused it. I have since just rerouted all my vacuum lines and bypassed all unneed stuff.

Re: explain the Heater Control Vacuum Tank and how it works

If it is what I am thinking of it is straight forward: the tank holds vacuum, when the driver presses the go-pedal to the point that manifold vacuum is lowered, the tank supplies vacuum to hold the heater and/or A/C doors and coolant valve in the proper positions.

Otherwise the doors and coolant valve would change their postitions as vacuum was lost.

The check valve also plays a part in this.

On some vehicles this vacuum tank is referred to as the 'orb of power.'

RBob.

haha, the old orb of doom!

Like Rbob said, without a reserve of vacuume, when you mash the go pedal your heater controls will go nuts (vents will default to defrost with no vac) and can also be a major issue if you use the cruise control.

Personally i tossed mine across the yard along with many other usless cluttering things under the hood. but then again i dont have the cruise and my heater controls are mechanical so its no big deal.

just get a 82 or 83 vacuum tank thing. they mounted up on the firewall this way you don't have to run a mess of vacuum lines and it still looks neat.

Re: explain the Heater Control Vacuum Tank and how it works

is it really noticable when the heater doors start messing up when you mash the gas?if its not then I wont bother reinstalling the part. also does anything else woprk along with this thing? I took a lot of stuff out of my car. I do recall that this part was located on the drivers side behind the fender and only accessable from under the car. There is no electronics plugged into so maybe I could just run sme new lines to it. Does anyone have a diagram of how this thing should have been hooked up vacuum wise

not a big issue for the heater doors. but the cruise will be noticable.
their should also be a vacuum line that goes to the pollution cannister.

i am re doing my engine bay in my 85 TA and i am looking for a complete diagram for the vacuum lines and tank. so if anyone knows where i could get one from please share.
i am just not sure about their point to point connections
