what distributor to buy?

ok here's the deal. i have an 86 LG4 camaro, computer controlled quadrajet set up of course. i am going to ditch it because my quadrajunk is all screwed up. i have a non-computer edelbrock carb and intake to throw on, but i do not know what distributor my situation requires.

what dizzy should i buy?

vaccum advance?

hei?

mechanical advance?

what the hell is the difference?

will it work with my stock ignition set up?

You will actually need all of the above, sort of. What you want is an HEI unit with a mechanical advance and vacuum advance(how they come). You do not want a race unit that has the mechanical advance welded and what not. What you really need though, is to get what you have going, you will see no gain in hp going to that setup. Get what you have right, and you will be miles ahead.

If I remember right the 86 is still a flat tappet cam? If so a standard HEI with vacuum advance is fine. Just tap into the power wire to the old coil and run to the batt terminal of the new dizzy.

i mentioned in the original post that i am not doing this swap for hp. my quadrajet set up sucks. it is shooting gas into my air cleaner at high rpm, rather than into my intake, causing sputtering. also runs rich at times. i have removed my smog. i figure why not go the whole way and just junk that stock crap and go completely mechanical. i will also be putting my headers on, so i expect a good hp increase.
