Is there such thing as an idle air control on my car?

If so, where would it be located? I have the 4 barrel setup. I've dug through the shop manual, but I am still the complete newby. The car is idling high. Ive got it running well all things equal otheriwise. The high idle is the last thing to knock out on the engine side.

not that the adjustment screw didn't cross my mind, by this car was completely stock. It just seems too obvious. I don't want to throw anything out of wack. What is the correct idle when the car is warm? Isn't there more than one adjustment screw also?

"Correct" idle with a carb is pretty much where you prefer it to be, but generally stock engines are happy with around 750-900 in P or N, and around 600-700 in Drive.

Re: Is there such thing as an idle air control on my car?

My buddies LG4 loves about 700-750RPM in P/N, and when he puts it in drive it is exactly 500rpm. Anything higher than that, the exhaust sounds weird, and when you put it in Drive, it kinda slamms the clutches just a little where it is noticible.

Re: Is there such thing as an idle air control on my car?

Start the car, let it fully warm up so that the choke/fast idle comes off, then adjust the screw with it running, untill it idles within the range I mentioned in my post above.

All the idle adjustment screw is, is a stop-screw for the throttle lever on the carb. Screw it in = higher idle, screw it out = lower idle. Just make adjustments about 1/4 turn or so at a time, give it a quick rev just so it can 'reset' itself and see where it idles, and keep adjusting as necessary. Its pretty simple and straightforward.

Re: Is there such thing as an idle air control on my car?

By adjusting that, am I messing with the rich lean mixture at all? I don't wont to foul plugs, or worse. I am scared of making adjustments on my carb, because I fundementally don't understand how it works completely. The car starts up wonderfully right now. Everything is great except the high idle. I will try it, and take notes on how many quarter increments I back it out in case it starts acting funny. My main fear is always messing something up. I am on my own (save the advice I've been getting from this board).

Look real close at the screw end (opposite the turning slot), and make sure it is touching the stop. Sometimes they will hang open a little bit from something else.

Looking at the turning slot, counterclockwise, out should slow idle.
Clockwise, in should raise the idle speed.

Count your 1/4 turns, a little turn should make a difference.
