i need a new dist. and i was looking at my car today and noticed that its awfully close to the cowl, and im just making sure that ill be able to pull the whole dist. out, i will right?
Re: changing distributor
Yes you can pull it all out.I just pulled mine tuesday. The only thing I had to do was pull the cap. Also make sure you are on #1 before you pull it makes things so much easier to put new one in.

Re: changing distributor
Yeah, you gotta take the cap and wires off first...
1) Label the wires by Cyl# using masking tape or something
2) Draw a diagram of where each # wire connects to the cap, using the flat side of the Ign module (where the 2 connectors plug in) as a reference in your picture.
3) Take off the cap, and look at which direction the rotor is pointing. Try your best to draw the picture of which way the metal contact on it is pointing in relationship to the firewall. This is important.
4) Loosen the distributor bolt, remove the hold down clamp, remove the bolt, and then pull upward on the distributor while wiggling the rotor a little. Should come right out.
----------------------------
Now, once it is out, dont move the car, dont touch the starter, dont even push the clutch. The motor cant turn at all. First put the new rotor on the new dizzy, and then as you are dropping it in, make sure the new rotor points the same direction. The camshaft shouldnt move, so as you drop it down the hole, the rotor will move direction a little. You have to account for this, because it has to point the right way when its ALL THE WAY IN. I made that mistake a few times.
After you are sure its in right, reinstall the clamp and bolt, but leave it loose. Put the new cap on, and all the wires according to your diagram. Sometimes, you might have to have somebody turn the cap a little while you crank the motor, to make it start.
Finish up by shooting the timing with an inductive light, and then put the bolt GFT.
good luck.
