305 or 350 question just curious?

Hey,

this is my first post and i am just wondering if anybody had some input, i purchased my 91 z28 under the impression it was a 305 tpi as per the vin# but the guy who sold it to me was selling it for his cousin and said he thought his cousin dropped a 350 tpi in it i have read the threads and know the only way to know for sure is to check the numbers on the block by the bellhousing. after looking at 305 and 350's for awhile i noticed the 305's oil cap is placed closer to the firewall on the valve cover and the 350's oil cap is placed closer towards the front of the car on the valve covers i'm a rookie but has anyone else noticed this and could this be a possibilty that i am the proud owner of a 350 i will check the block as soon as i pull it out of storage but any input would be appreciated

i noticed the 305's oil cap is placed closer to the firewall on the valve cover and the 350's oil cap is placed closer towards the front of the car on the valve covers
That is not correct.

SBC valve covers are SBC valve covers. 305s and 350s use the same ones in any given year, part # for part #.

What you're REALLY seeing, is that somebody put the driver's side VC on BACKWARDS on the 350 you were looking at. (yes they REALLY do have an "intake" and an "exhaust" side; not "front" and "rear")

The only sure way to tell which one is in your car now, is to check the block casting number. It is on top of the bell housing flange, behind the driver's side head. Another thing, maybe easier, is to look at the block stamping, on a little "pad" looking place on the top of the block deck, in front of the pass side head. This stamping contains the sequence number from the VIN of the vehicle the engine was installed in at the factory. If it matches the car's VIN, odds are good that it is what the VIN says it is.
