Lots of questions...Please help...engine rebuild or swap
I have a 1991 Z28 5.7L with apprx 162,000 miles on it (still runs too). I have a 2002 SS that I am thinking of selling to try and get top dollar for it before the 5th gens come out. Im looking to using some of that money to fix up my 91 Z but dont know where to start.
1. How much does it cost to rebuild the motor stock versus how much to upgrade the motor (meaning boosting horsepower, changing the heads, crank, changing the cam etc.)
2. Since the stock numbers for the stock 350 is 245hp from the factory, I would be happy upgrading it to 300+hp. How much do you think that would cost and what would I have to do?
3. If I upgrade the motor, would I be able to still use the stock TPI or would I have to change that too?
4. I'm looking at spending around $3000-$5000 for this drivetrain rebuild. Is this price range acceptable or am I out of my mind?
5. Also, any reputable pony car shops in northern california. I live in SF and Im willing to drive to a good reputable shop.
And how much does it cost to rebuild the rearend? I rebuilt my 700r4 transmission for about $700 5 years ago so I have an idea on how much the trans rebuild will be.
Thank you in advance for any help and advice you can give.

a Stock rebuild can be done for pretty cheap depending on what parts you use. You can piece a kit together or buy a kit.
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...3&autoview=sku
that 355 kit is a good quality cast assembly for 870 bucks, just need cam bearings now
block cleaning and prep will run around 500 bucks or so. Assembly would be around 300 or so plus extra plugs/seals/materials.
I'd say you could get away with a new fresh good rebuild for around 1500-2000 depending on how much work is done and who does it
rebuild the heads with new seals and springs. Should be around 300 or less dependign on what you get. IF you have more work done to them like screw in studs and guides cut down for more lift, spring pockets widened, then its around 500 total give or take. Not a bad deal.
add gaskets and such, you should beable to get away with a complete long block for 2200-3000 bucks, again depending on whats all done. This would be a nice longblock capable of handling 400 hp easily.
Add a little bigger cam and some TPI bolt ons and you will have 300-325 hp on motor fairly easily. You may beable to reach 300hp on motor with just a cam change and using stock TPI with alittle tuning ofcourse.
basically a whole new motor for around 3000 bucks for a stock TPI rebuild motor, plus intake upgrades/cam if you do all that. Figure around 3800-4000 for everything pan to TPI intake for a cammed/aftermarket TPI motor. Shop around and find good deals, its cheaper
Check out the california boards for some advice there. Some GREAT resources there. Those guys know TPI stuff and cali emissions
now you could buy crate ZZ4 and add your TPI to that. figure 3500 or so for that motor and just sell off the carb manifold, thats a great deal for a motor. Might be a better bet even tho shipping will be 400 bucks or so
Aftermarket heads are generally in the 900-1500 dollar range nowadays for whatever you get, from iron heads to aluminum. Vortecs are 550-700 i believe for a pair now but require vortec TPI manifold.
Cams are 100-300 depending what you get and where you get it
Intake mods for TPI are totalling around 700-800 if you buy new base/new runners. FIRST TPI system is 1000 but is the best TPI system out there and includes throttle body
Superram is legal but isnt made anymore so you will need to find used for 500-700 bucks.
BBK intake is suppose to come out someday this year but who knows. that is like the superam but suppose to be under 600 bucks. If it is then its your best bet
