Timing Question

Will incorrect timing make it shut off? I have a 86 Camaro with a 305, new mild cam, lifters , edelbrock air gap manifold, edelbrock 650 cfm carb, new battery, alt, and water pump, accel distributor. I know the dis. wasn't tightened down, it ran strong at first then it started to die after about 4 miles, the oil pressure idiot light came on and the battery light came on and she died. i got her started back up and adjusted timing and it seemed fine. Could this be the cause or should i look into other problems?

"I know the dis. wasn't tightened down,"
You found the problem. Since your dizzy was not properly secured, it will throw the timning off.

Ya that will make it shut off, it probably retarded the timing enough to make it stall

Re: Timing Question

Try adjusting the timing from 3 degrees to 12 degrees (this is based on my stock timing figure of 6 degrees). You'll notice a huge difference in the way the car idles. Both the type of idle (smooth/rough) as well as idle RPM. Turn it far enough and it will die right on the spot.

I know lots of people like advancing the timing a bit. But I find that the stock timing gives the best idle as well as removes the risk of pinging.
