Re: Trans am hard to start when warm

what do you mean harder to start?
cranks over very slowly, barely catches?
cranks over fast, but won't catch?
etc?

It cranks over more times before it starts.

Sometimes i can smell gas so i dont know if it is giving it to much or what but onley does it after the first start when it warms up then when you go to start it maby 10 mins later it takes more cranks to start.

Re: Trans am hard to start when warm

91 Ragtop told me he had the same problem and the fuel injectors were the culprit. Does it have a semi-rough idle as well? Mine has a rough idle and does the same thing yours does. I plan to get new injectors as soon as possible.

check map sensor and look for any small vacuum leaks --------------bigzeke355bird92

Re: Trans am hard to start when warm

yeah my car idles high and it is all the way down that i can get it but somtimes if i give it a quick tap on the gas pedal it lowers the idle.

Re: Trans am hard to start when warm

a couple of things you need to look at here ,one reason why you may be smelling gas is if map sensor is not sending accurate vacuum signal to ecm than the injectors may be dropping too much fuel ,also need to look at fuel pressure regulator they loose calibration from all that heat ,with the car started take a wrench and tap on regulator see if you notice a change in idle characteristics can also get this same symptoms from faulty o2 sensor not feeding correct oxygen mixture signals this will give you same effect ------------bigzeke92bird355 150 shot hitman

Re: Trans am hard to start when warm

Next time it does it check for spark. A bad module will tend to fail on a hot restart. Other ignition components may also fail under heat soak conditions.

Bad sensors shouldn't cause a hard start. The ECM should be in non-feedback mode during starting.

The gas you're smelling is likely the normal amount that is fed to the motor, it's just not burning because the engine isn't starting.

There could, of course, be other causes but best to check the basics next time it occurs...fuel, air, spark.

Re: Trans am hard to start when warm

i beg to differ a bad map sensor will cause a rich condition ,usually a bad module will need to cool if its faulty ,been teaching automechanics for a long time ,look at your map sensor and check for vacuum leaks if map sensor isnt working within its parameters then its fooling the ecm into dumping more fuel this fuel is unburned therefore you smell it --------bigzeke355bird92

Re: Trans am hard to start when warm

sid a bad map sensor ,o2 sensor will cause you a rich condition this could explain why it takes the car longer revolutions to start because the cylinders have excess fule in them ,also some coolant temp sensors will havew the same effect if this sensor is bad then the ecm cannot recognize the correct temp of the coolant therfore it thinks the coolant is cold and it sends more fuel to the injectors ,you know how on a cold mornig car idles up until its warm this is because of the coolant sensor so dont believe sensors cannot cause a no start or hard start condition because they can ---------bigzeke355bird92
