the egr no working properly will cause it too idle a little differently. i hear it is not a good idea to run without one. as far as the muffler. shouldnt make much difference. i have heard that with no cats and muffler, the backpressure will be too low to operate the egr correctly... im having some of the same issues right now.

i would just tear up the junkyard looking for one when i took my muffler and pipes off from the cat it never cause me any problems at all... besides my neighbors getting all butt hurt

An '84 wouldn't respond the same to removing the muffler as an '88 would.
The factory EGR valve on TBI cars has a nasty habit of not working correctly when you free the engine of the restrictive factory exhaust. But, it shouldn't cause it to idle rough.
What exactly do you mean by "my egr fell off"?
