Problems all around 86 2.8

Hi guys i have a few questions, i bought an 86 camaro with a 2.8, 5 speed and a whole lot of problems about 6 months ago ive been tinkering here and there and fixed a few cosmetic things and suspension problems but when it comes to the motor im lost big time. I bought it and drove it home on the interstate i decided to see what it could do so i floored it and nothing really happened i maybe got up to 80 so when i got the car home it was time for a tune up plugs wires dist and cap air filter and one of those intakes from auto zone and then had to replace the starter, battery and several cabels. I had a freind tell me that i could trash all that vacume crap and so i did and have regreted it ever since. I was told maybe an hour after i threw the vapor can into the dump that i had to have that for my car to operate correctly sooo began the search for a new one i found one in a junk yard hooked it up as best as a i could following the diagram from this site and sure enough the car ran better although the can didnt have the hook up for the sensor i suppose. I set the timing closer to what it should be but i know its not right on the money as i did it by ear and thought as long as it wasnt backfiring i was at least closer than i had been. Then the i shut the car off restarted it it started fine and ran GREAT, 24 hours later however im having a couple problems if you guys could lend me some hints id greatly appreciate it.

1. Car doesnt start right up allmost never has i have to turn it over for a few seconds stop then try again normally it will start on second try in the mornings though sometimes it takes several trys.

2. Once the car starts it wants to die if it doesnt sit for about 2-3 mins if i press the gas its like it floods out or bogs down for a few seconds then revs up (i can also hear it back fire out the intake)

3. Once its warm it idles funny it will want to die then surge then want to die then surge if i keep my foot on the gas a little it runs fine when i let off the gas it idles down and wants to die till i either give it more gas or it dies

4. Also none of my gauges work except speedo so its hard to tell whats going on really

Like i said if you guys could give me some tips id appreiciate it

Re: Problems all around 86 2.8

A little update.

The car now wont start it turns over and deisels for a few secs then dies the just turns over.

Im fairly sure i have a timing problem from what ive read on this site but sources also point to a fuel problem or vaccum leaks. I know the fuel pump was supposedely replaced i know this because prior owner cut a hole in the trunk to get to it...............but i cut out a peice of titanium and shot some sealant under and around it to keep the fuel vapors out of the car. then i replaced the fuel filter. so aside from kinked lines which i havent found any of or bad injectors which i dont know how nor have any tools to check. i think im ok.

I have been looking for this mystical est plug so i can try to set the base timing and for the life of me i cant find it anywhere around the rear of the firewall near the AC. ugh any help would be appreciated
