Should I throw out the block, or rebuild?

Bored 60 over already and it may have a spun crank bearing, and crapped rod. Does this usually have an affect on the cylinder walls? I know 60 over is pushing it. I've never heard of anything bigger than that. I have access to plenty used chevy 350's, so I'm not really worried about just tossin it.

If I do scrap the 60 over block, and just build a new motor.....can I use some of the upgraded parts from the broken motor? Like, the camshaft or lifters? I'm already assuming the bore size doesn't matter for the intake manifold and carb. The heads on the broken motor are upgraded too, will they be useable? Or do they go hand in hand with the block once it's bored?

I'm new to engine building.

Well how many miles on it since its last rebuild? 60 over is the max overbore on a factory SBC so if its got a few miles on it might not be cost effective in the long run. If id dosnt have alot of miles on the rebuild then i would pull it apart and make a parts list see about how much damage youve really got. Check the cylinder out of round as well. Although if the bill ran up over say 400-500 to get it back to 100% ide say forget it and just start with another block. For times sake however you could always swap motors and hold on to it and tear it down to see if its worth the rebuild or not for future use. That way youve got the car back and your not waiting on the results of tearing down the block to see how much damage was actually done and figureing out what parts youll need and get estimates for machine work ect. Stuff like that can take a long time lol. As far as will things swap over all the parts will swap over so you can use the heads the intake cam ect in your other motor. The only problems youde run into is if you were trying to put like a early style SBC intake on vortec style heads or a roller cam in a non roller block stuff like that. Other than that for the most part everythings interchangeable just make sure its all in good shape.

Re: Should I throw out the block, or rebuild?

Well I'm told by a mechanic that I personally know and trust, that it's a crank bearing. So all I need is a new crank, and to check all the connecting rods..and have them inspected and machined. The motor has only 2 years on it since the bore/rebuild, and it's all dolled up with heads, cam, lifters, flat top pistons...the works.

So I'm going to buy a crank kit...a set of gaskets...an engine stand...a crane....and I should be in good shape. Maybe new plugs, and some filters if I'll be going near any.

Oh...more, exciting pictures of my new project...and some sweet dolly carnage. I hated that dolly.
