'84 camaro hard cold start and rough idle
Hello, first post here and thanks in advance for any advice you guys can offer.
I picked up an '84 z28 HO with the L69 305 about a month ago. It is having some issues so my dad is helping me do some work on it, and we then took it to a mechanic to do some other things.
Some background on whats been done and why, so far. The car was always difficult to get to start when cold, but when hot wouldn't start at all for some reason. It was gushing oil and fluids in multiple places. The A/C wasn't working and the car was breaking 260 degrees when idle and in stop and go traffic.
To start with we had the A/C repaired. We also replaced the thermostat and gasket. After those things when the A/C is running (fan is on) the car never gets hot.
We replaced the distributor, plugs, wires. The disty looked like lightning had hit it. After we did that the car would start up when hot pretty reliably.
We replaced the valve cover gaskets and found a number of other places oil was leaking and tightened those things up. We also replaced a number of vacuum hoses that were falling apart or missing.
Next we took it to a mechanic to find the other oil/fluid leaks. He replaced the water pump and power steering box because those were leaking. There was a leak from the transmission he also fixed.
He also suggested rebuilding the Carb so he went ahead and did that.
At this point the car runs fairly well when hot but getting it to cold start is a pain in the ***. Pump the gas several times and turn the engine over, try again, usually after about 10+ pumps of the gas peddle and turning it over 3 or 4 times she starts up (i've killed the battery trying to start it up). The car idles at like 1500 rpms at this point when finally started, which seems really high.
Then if I get the car started and run it/drive it and turn it off, it will restart really reliable but the idle now is really low, like 500-600 rpms and sometimes stumbles and stalls out. Push the gas peddle once or twice though after it's started and she is good to go.
I'm not very mechanically inclined but I do own a repair manual and have access to my fathers tools. So if you have some advice to getme in the right direction on solving these problems I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Re: '84 camaro hard cold start and rough idle
Hi, instead of starting a new seperate thread I thought I'd ask this question in this thread as well since I'm still looking for some advice.
Today after driving around with no major problems other than previously mentioned I had my car doing something really weird.
Started it up and started driving. no problems. then as I started to open up the throttle a little the engine would sputter and the car wouldn't get over like 3k RPMs. It felt almost as if something was limiting the output power of the engine and the whole car would lung back and forth as it sputtered at 3-3500 RPMs.
it drove fine if I babied it and shifted really early but got violent if I opened it up even a little.
This has me worried, please help.
