#8 wire to find timing mark??

I have 91 camaro with tbi 305 converted to a carb. I was trying to find the timing mark with the # 1 wire but was unable to find it. I put to light to the # 8 wire and found it. is this a problem. I am having problem when the secondaries open up on the carb. If i press the pedal wide open it stumbles then finally catches up. If i ease it to wide open, it works great. It is a quadrajet. So i dont know if it is a timing problem or carb issue.
Thanks Chris

Re: #8 wire to find timing mark??

Did you disconnect the timing sensor wire (EST) before checking the timing?

As for the stumble, going to WOT throttle quickly causes the fuel mixture to go lean very quickly causing a stumble. An accelerator pump gives a shot of fuel as the throttle opens to overcome the brief lean mixture. You're probably not getting enough of a fuel shot from the accelerator pump.
