help please!

i have a 1991 chevrolet camaro rs 305 tbi 700r4

it started two days ago, the car started skipping badly so i bought a set of wires and found that two of my wires were laying on the exhaust and rubbed, changed wires and got car running smoothly again.

at apx 2:40pm yesterday i left for work and the car was running great i started down a hill and back of an average hill and the car turned a 180 the car would not downshift as it did not have the rpm or accelerate the engine popped and cracked to the top of the hill and i made a right and started back to the house, the car got to where it would not go over 60 mph i run 60 mph smooth anything after that it started popping and cracking again

the closer i got to the house 40 mph was my new speed i started to turn onto my street and knocked the car out of gear and it shut off i coasted to my driveway, after a few seconds i tried starting the car again it fired and was revving fine i drove it down the driveway and to the parking spot and it was spitting and sputtering again. there was a little black smoke during the revs.

i pulled the carpet back today and started the car and was listening to the fuel pump, it seems to be still strong and it is not idling up or down
and i checked the fuel injectors and they seem to be still spraying a well defined cone pattern when throttle is opend

could it be that my fuel pump is failing and just will not support my engine under load from the car.

I want to thank everyone in advance because i know how thirdgen performs and the service and advice from you guys are awesome. I have been a long time member of thirdgen since getting my camaro and you at thirdgen have helped me so much.

Edit- Also i have checked the ecm codes and have retrieved 4 codes, 15-coolant temp circuit, 23-manifold air temperature sensor, 32- egr system, 53- system over voltage , also please keep in mind that the codes were read after the air cleaner assembly was removed.

Re: help please!

Someone with more experience will probably know much better than I. However, I would suspect a bad ECM with so many trouble codes.

Secondly, I once had a car react that same way when the catalytic converter was clogged.

Re: help please!

would be interesting to see what readings those various sensors are giving the ecm. CTS can cause some truly bizarre driveablity issues.

Re: help please!

i read on here somewhere on how to test the coolant temp sensor and wiring something about +5 volts on one side and ground on the other side and the resistance specs at various temps im going to take a look into that as well, as far as the code 23 im not too bad worried about it like i say i had the air cleaner off i know it was unplugged and the ecm read it. therfore throwing that code, i have had problems with the code 53 for a while now just never the time to clean the grounds and retest someone told me to check the grounds at the back of the right cylinder head i know there is a bolt on it but do not know the condition of the grounds may be green.

UPDATE- i have replaced the fuel pump, fuel strainer and replaced the fuel filter at work, drove the car from my house to charlotte(work) and back a total of 65 miles and i havent ran into any problems so far.
