Thinkin about 4th gen, HELP!!!
hey guys, ok the deal is that some person on my local craigslist has posted a 94 Z28 for 800 bucks, but the thing is that the auto tranny (guessin its the 4l60e) wont shift after 2nd gear,LTI runs like a top but is it worth it,because I read that when the tranny doesn't shift into 3rd or 4th the clutches are screwed, is this true? how hard/expensive would it be to replace or rebuild the tranny?
Thanks in advance

That sounds like a $1000 fix to me. What's it worth with a good trans? $1800? Assuming you found another one with a good transmission, what are the chances it's not about ready to go out?
4th gens keep getting more attractive as the prices drop. But they're still harder to work on, and have most all of the same problems and build quality.

Re: Thinkin about 4th gen, HELP!!!
yes the motor is intechange able but ther willbe some wiring involved. lt1 is almost the same as the motor in your z butit uses front drive dist (optispark) and are very reliable, and have factory roller cams. So if the wireing does not scare you i would say it is worth it. But remember fourth gens are getting harder to find i goog shape. but good luck!

Also know that the LT1 has to be removed from the 4th gen car from UNDER - can't be taken out through the hood - so you'll need a lift for the swap job.

well we have 2 lifts in my shop class, one drive on, and a two post above ground, so it shouldnt be too much of a problem to do, so how much do u guys think I could sell the LT1, rear end, and other parts if I where to part it out?

And damn I'm glad I live down here with alot of pancho mechanics where the most they charge to rebuild a tranny is 600 bucks.

Re: Thinkin about 4th gen, HELP!!!
I've always read everywhere that the 4th gen motors had to be dropped instead of lifted, but if you've done it out the top, then cool. I know I'd hate to try and take the LT1 out the top of my 1997 - looks like the entire front end would have to come off!

yeah its tricky ... I hope there is not a "next time" but Maybe there will be one at my friends shop and I will take pictures of the motor coming out thru the top !!
