99 chevy s10 Mechanic sent it back!

my borther has a 99 s10 that has a 2.2 4cyd. it has worked fine for a few years after he bought it. it only has 130k miles on it and the engine is clean for being 11 years old. so one day he came home and shuts it off for 10 min and gos back out to start it and it cranks but wont start but shutters and sputters. its getting gas and spark so we changed fuel filter,put in injector cleaner, spark plugs, spark plug wires but still nothing. so i put it on the obd2 and got nothing from it...(after i had to go to the store and buy a 7 dollar battary)it couldnt read it. he took it to the mechanic and a week later they called and said they didnt know what is wrong with it but at no charge...i said wth! theres no way i would let a car leave my shop with out telling them something after a week! so back to 1 but now i have the worlds thoughts on what this problem could be! the only things we have changed are like i said above. im not sure what the mechanic did yet im going to ask him but im thinking of checking timming, ecm, power packs(X2), tps, injectors.

all thoughts would be great im alittle nerves because the mechanic sent it away not working... but well see how bad it is... thanks for your time

What does "so i put it on the obd2 and got nothing from it..." mean? You hooked up a reader and found no faults/codes stored? Or that it gave no response; couldn't connect?
