Trying to get it running
Trying to get it running
Hi everyone,
I just picked up my sister-in-laws 92 Firebird V6 and I am storing it for her for a few months while she moves to a new house. She parked the car in her garage about 10 years ago and hasn't driven it since. Being such a nice brother in law, I am planning on getting it road worthy for her again so she can drive it on weekends, etc. She bought it new and I know she wishes she could jump in it and go.
Anyways, believe it or not, 10 years later, the car won't start, it just cranks and cranks. I don't think the fuel pump is working. I pressed on the valve on the fuel rail and nothing squirted out, there was a little gas present, but under no pressure. Think it could be something else, or am I heading in the right direction? The fuel gauge is stuck on above full, does the fuel pumps on these things have the float attached to them? Sorry, im not a GM guy so I dont know too much about these cars.
So my next question, I followed the fuel lines and they go up to the top of the tank, I guessing an intank pump? So how do I get to this thing? Is there an access panel on the trunk floor behind the rear seats?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Jeff

Re: Trying to get it running
if there is fuel pressure and it bleeds down right away it is bad injector(s) or regulator. I bet the fuel filter is clogged or the pump with sediment from sitting that long. The only way to tell is with quick fuel pressure test since you already know you have little volume.
If the gauge reads that high i would check for an open circuit to the sending unit. Mine reads above full pretty high when its on a full tank so maybe its just full unless you know for a fact it isnt. You may be replacing the pump anyway so I wouldnt worry about it yet.
No access panel unless you make one there is a thread on here that show how to do it and its not hard, just have to fab a cover for it and seal it under the carpet. Either that or drop the exhaust and rear end to change it.
Im doing mine soon and am going to make an access panel that looks nice since thats how they should of came. You have to cut the lines and splice in the new ones with compression fittings I think.
