TPI Coil Question
I have a 87 z28. The engine is out of a 89 formula. It is a TPI car. I have a blaster coil. There are places for 4 wires. 2 connectors with 2 wires each. I only have 2 wires actually going to the coil though. Is this ok? Some have any pics?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: TPI Coil Question
The stock coil has 4 connections becuase the 2 on each terminal are bussed together.
The +12V side powers the coil and also supplies voltage to run the module in the distributor. The - side of the coil is the side that the module alternately grounds and un-grounds to charge and fire the coil, and it's also the tap-in point to supply a signal to the tachometer.
87 still used a large cap HEI with the coil built into the distributor cap, where 88-up used a separate divorced coil. Electronically speaking, the coil is wired exactly the same. It's just that 88-up you could see all the wires from the outside where 87-down you would have to look under the coil cover to see everything.
If it runs and the tach works, it's probably wired OK. If not, then something's wired wrong.

Re: TPI Coil Question
Thanks, it runs great, just checking. I have the "divorced coil". I guess that was all from the firebird.
Thanks again
