First, try this diagnostic article:
http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38
If all that tests good, then look at

Re: Car wont start
It's called a neutral safety switch - just about any parts store should carry it:

It's not a real good idea to start throwing parts at a problem hoping you get the right one. It can get really expensive. Was it working Ok before this happened, or is this the way you got it? When you try to start it does the security light come on?
Re: Car wont start
it ran perfect when i got it this just started recently and no my security light doesnt come on and i try to get the service engine code and it keeps coming up code 12 which means its fine but its not since it wont crank and im running out of ideas

Re: Car wont start
Even if the Vats has been bypassed, when you turn the key to on, but not all the way to start, the security light should come on briefly and then go off. If it's not coming on at all maybe the bulb is out or missing. Since you have a key with no resistor I assume it has been bypassed. You may want to check the wiring and make sure the bypass didn't become disconnected. Check the technical articles section for the Vats bypass or search in here for details of what you are looking for. You said the starter was good. Have you checked it and it's connections?

Re: Car wont start
Well, I don't know. If I had to guess, I'd start looking at the bypass wiring or the actual ignition switch down the column. Newbie knows this stuff, maybe he'll help you out?

Re: Car wont start
I don't know much else really to try.
I have issues with mine - been having issues for years. This spring I decided to tackle it, and I still have issues. I've replaced everything. But I did dig up into the dash and found that a PO had hacked into all the ignition wires in my car, but had put them all back together with butt connectors - so I think my issue is a bad connection where they reconnected those wires - I recrimped them, and all was good for a few weeks, but now it's acting up again.
All I can tell you is that that starter diagnose article has everything there is in it, it's just a matter of tracing down the issue. Good Luck!

Keep updating on what happens, I will be attempting to tackle this issue on my car tomorrow, as long as I can get my homework done today!
Re: Car wont start

Re: Car wont start
Yellow wires and connectors are generally part of the airbag system. Do you still have the stock steering wheel with the airbag?
Re: Car wont start
oh ok makes sense the stock steering wheel wasnt on when i bought it i just have some aftermarket one and i checked the connection it looked good and still wouldnt start so i took off the old resistor hoping a new one would do the trick
Re: Car wont start
the connection looked solid everything was staying together fine and i got new resistors and none of them could start my car could the vats module gone out?

Re: Car wont start
Yes it absolutely could, there are pricey bypasses for the whole thing, but people have described on here how to do it. Do a search and you should find it, I couldn't tell you, since so far I haven't had to do it and really hope that by saying that I haven't jinxed myself. Yikes

Re: Car wont start
You would have to change all that and it would cost you up around a thousand bucks. DON'T DO IT. Do a search on the electronics board for Vats bypass and skip the stuff about the resistor thing and check out the others about bypassing the whole system.

Yeah, I think you found the answer on another thread that showed this bypass http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=&_trkparms
Looks like your best next move.

Re: Car wont start
Just did the bypass over the weekend, the toughest part was trying to figure our how many resistors to use, we were at radio shack.

YUP! Perfectly, now just have to fix everything else, well not so much anymore, narrowed it down to injectors and clutch throw out bearing! Gotta love our cars!
Re: Car wont start
ok i finally got it to start
but it idles rough and then eventually stalls i've been told i should take it to a shop to get an idle relearn done and ive also heard just drive it around and it will fix it self which would be the better option?

Re: Car wont start
I've never heard of any "idle relearn" before - sounds like BS to me. The TBI chips are capable of 'learning' on their own to a degree.
I'd start looking into basics like spark, fuel pressure, vacuum leaks, etc. Replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been done this year, check plugs, check plug wires for continuity, check injectors for nice cone pattern, etc.

Idle relearn, sounds like a fancy way of telling you they are going to undo the battery and let it sit to clear puter. And charging 75 bucks. LOL
