In reply #29 I asked if your power steering pump has a high pressure switch, you never answered, can you answer it now?

Sorry, didn't realize I should have said "Steering gear box."
Can you post a picture of the gear box at the end of the steering shaft? If there is a switch you can't miss it.

Yes I will tommoro.

Also while the car is just parked, or even in Drive but with brakes on, if I turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right it will cause the rpm to drop a few hundred followed byt the car making a strange noise continuously until the wheel is released. Is this normal?

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

The steering pump should make a whining sound when turned extreme left, or right. If there is a switch on the gear box it signals the ECM to increase the rpm to keep from stalling.
I sure you know someone with a car like yours, or just go to car lot test one and compare when you do the same thing to it. Just don't let the salesman talk you into buying it.

I believe it does, If I remember correctly that was one of the first things the mech checked and he said it was fine.
And no, I know no one with a 3rd gen Camaro and car lots here Generally dont sell below 4th Gen Camaros. Theyre kinda rare around here.
Im suspecting that it could be the Injectors but I want to get confirmation before putting new ones in.

Your Mech said the switch was working fine?
So it should increase rpm not drop rpm. If it doesn't stall then it not important right now. but it shouldn't drop rpm if the ECM and the switch are operating correctly.

Putting that aside you really need to try things to narrow it down that don't cost money, you're looking at another $500 for injectors/labor if you can't do it yourself.

you need to video what you're doing at the moment it stalls, include the instrument panel.

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

Just a update.
Its been at a Chevy dealership repair garage for 8 days now. They actually got it to die once, said it wasnt normal (as in its not gas sloshing around).
They suspect the distributor as they said theyve seen this before but they want to make sure and test it some more.
The distributor was replaced, twice (faulty one put in then it had to be towed the day after for another refurbished one to be put it), soo its possible that it really is it.

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

Had a similar problem in another EFI car it was wiring in the steering column shorting out. Dont want to throw you on a wild goose chase though.

When he did the pump was there a section of hose that needed replacing? Connections nice and tight? Fill the tank?

Well thats one of the few things that hasnt been checked.

This is a different repair shop this time by the way. But as far as I know the other mech didnt replace any hose, and claims the connections are good. It dosnt seem like a gas related problem anymore though.

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

So I got it back since the shop was not doing anything.
They said the only thing at all they could find wrong is that the engine mount is loose, but it was just a guess that it would cause the car to die.
The engine light actually came on, on a rough start. Got it scanned and it is the EGR valve. Ive researched it a bit and apparently its possible that if that valve gets stuck or something like that it can cause the car to shut off.
Thoughts?

If you have a power steering pump then yeah they buzz when it gets ALL THE WAY to one side or the other.

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

try lifting all 4 wheels off the ground, then see if the problem still happens when the wheel is turned to the left. will the car start when the wheel is turned all the way to the left? what about reverse?

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

Everything thats possible on a rack has been tested, all hardware runs completly fine, except the EGR valve.
The Valve is the first solid lead Ive had, the light has been comming on over a year.

Before you buy a new one you can take out the old one and clean it and see if it helps any before buying a new one. My step-daughter's needs cleaned out about every 3 weeks. She won't buy new cause she hopes to get a better car soon..... but cleaning her EGR is a temporary fix...... you did replace your fuel pump relay?

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

Yes it was replaced a long time ago. Wasnt it. Unless its the egr valve, wheels, or springs causing it then there are no more leads, except wiring but that wouldnt make too much sense.
All Chevy came up with over 8 days is that the engine mount was loose and that it could be causing the engine to move, but they said it was just a guess.

I was just thinking the same thing. When I got my 89 RS last month and actually got it to a drivable state, the tilt steering was loose, a common issue with GM's tilt steering wheel assembly. The looseness was caused by four external torx bolts within the tilt mechanism. Safe to drive, but disconcerting as all hell. Also, when I turned the steering wheel all the way to the left, especially when starting a downhill drop ( which is the way my driveway is situated) the steering wheel issue would interfere with the ignition key lock cylinder and shut down the engine and lock the wheel.

OP, this sounds very similar to your original description of the problem. Is there any looseness in your tilt mechanism?

Re: Bad problem, need help please.

Is there a way to check?
The steering column as a whole hasnt been throughly checked, a mech took a quick glimpse under the dash and under the hood to see if wires were touching.

Edit: Also would it die while in park and you turned the wheels or only when diving under certain conditions such as downhill?
