Re: est wire 85 L69 4bbl ?

Yes - it does.

Follow the large wire loom from the pass side fender at the firewall - somewhere in that loom, usually close to the strut tower on pass side, the loom will open, have a single tan wire that comes out with a connector on it, and it goes right back into the same wiring loom. The connector is usually black, about the size of an ink pen round, and about 2 inches long.

Re: est wire 85 L69 4bbl ?

i have opened all looms and did not find a tan and black let alone any conector. Is it possible it is a different color ? does anyone know where this wire originates from ? or where it terminates ?

Re: est wire 85 L69 4bbl ?

.Hmmm. What about farther up front - like around the strut tower - there should be a loom there - has wires for the alternator, the starter, and the fusible links, as well as the knock sensor wire.

Draw a mental line, from the front of the water pump to the pass side fender. Then, halfway between that line, and the A/C evaporator - down beside the side of the strut tower - what's down there? Should be another loom in that area - that's where I've always found the EST wire.

Re: est wire 85 L69 4bbl ?

I'm lost - you shouldn't have to open any loom - it should just be hanging out on it's own! If the car is computer controlled, it has to have an EST wire. And I see no vacuum advance can on your distributor, so I'm assuming it's computer controlled. You do have things on the carb right? Like a TPS, IAC, etc. - it's a computer controlled carb right?

From '82 to '86, the EST connection was a flat 4-wire connector in the wires coming from the base of the distributor going into the loom that goes across the firewall. You don't have to unwrap the loom, but the connector often hides behind & below the distributor.

I know the 4 wire connector, but the loom i open that that is in has no tan / black wire ( that i can see ). does this wire enter the firewall on the passengers side next to the fan ?

OK - that makes sense.

are you saying i can stop looking for the tan wire, or are you saying that if i follow the 4 wire connector it will lead me to the tan and black ?

I'm saying stop looking for "a" tan & black wire, or "an" EST wire. On the '82-'86 V8 models, you disconnect the flat 4-wire connector to set the base timing.

Or, were you trying to do something else with the EST wire?

That is a computer carb. The connector on top is the mixture control solenoid, and the one on the front is the throttle position sensor.
