(this may be a little long please bare with me)
i had the carb changed on my 305 by a shady tree mechanic that was a friend of my friends the guy put a carb of a 350 but alot of the electrical connections didnt hook up and it was running way to rich (gas in oil black smoke could smell gas on dipstick) so that gave me a lifter tap so i got the old carb rebuild changed oil... still lifter tap ran that oil about 15-25 miles did a motor flush changer oil with 4 quarts of oil and one quart or marvel mystery oil lifter got less noiseie but could still hear it this is the problem when trying to crank it u have to hold gas and rev when it catches to keep from stalling and when u first turn the key for a the motor stops trying to turn over then it goes and sometimes i have idling problem
