FIRST gEN 3 HELP ME
FIRST gEN 3 HELP ME
My girls son is a Marine, he will be back from Afganistanin October, he wanted a 3rd gen camaro, I found a original one cuz that what he wanted. Now he wants me to make it go fast....I wanted to buy a 95 SS Camaor, but he liked this body.
IM a gear head guys, check outmy garage, but IM clueless about BOLTON'S for this car, i dont want a 10 second racer, i want to give hima lil boost.
I was thinking throttle body and mass air flow sensor, am I on the right track?
Any advice woudl be great, but all I want to do is bolt on's, when he is serious about going fast it wont be inthis car. This is a gem, all origianl andvery clean.
I can make CHIT go fast, carburated CHIT.
JOKE___what does FORD DO that no other manufacturer does?
answer----CIRCLE THER MISTAKE.

Going fast is directly proportional to how much $$ you've got to spend. I'd start with headers and a 3" catback exhaust. That'll free up anywhere from 10-20hp. From there, cold air intake. If money isn't realy an option, you can look into getting new heads and a new intake for it. Do a search on the boards and you should come up with lots of good ideas.

Yeah not much we can suggest without knowing what you're starting with, but generally any 3rdgen takes kindly to a full exhaust, since its a camaro, I would get a dual snorkel intake box if it doesn't have one already, one of the best factory intake setups I've ever seen...and maybe throw a cam at it, which isn't much of a bolt on per say, if its a v8 you could put some better heads and intake on instead, but cam would be a lot cheaper. If you do that stuff it will breathe a lot better and be more responsive, bigger throttle body is also a good one for that.
Re: FIRST gEN 3 HELP ME
Well guys I was a GM mechanic for 14 yrs .but..this is a1985 tpi 5.0 with auto. hardtop.
These cars are slow and handling is iffy.
IM not trying to offend anyone, but the car sounds good, but is a slomobile.
Im already in touch with summit, gonna order a cold air induction with K&N filter.
So ur thinkin headers and exhaust out the gate eh?
Well you guys have done the work and even though I worked on them, I never tried making one of these go fast. I did a 97 Ram Air T/A and after the air box change I did a chip and throttle body, Granitelli I do beleive.but the exhaust was a dual from the factory so it was never changed, if theheads would of been done, then more breathing sure owuld of helped.
His mother dont want me to make it a street brawler like my Monster Carlo, but the KID IS A MARINE,if he wants FAST im gonna do it forhim.
So thanks for helpin this old man out, but makin a good kid happy.

Let me be the first to tell you, politely, that all third gens are NOT the same. For instance an 89' Turbo Trans Am is not the same as an RS TBI 5.0 camaro. And as far as handling goes, mine outhandles my buddies 4th gen any day of the week. That being said, I'm prior service as well and what your doing is cool. The TPI doesn't like high RPM's, and the major pitfall would be the rear. Do him a huge favor and put a full exhaust on it, including headers, and possibly look into having it tuned. It'll work well for him for a while. If you want to just go all out, crate it with a carbed motor, and call it a day. I can show you a couple sites that have great performance crate motors, that wont kill the wallet if you're interested.
IM a gear head and a ZZ3 would look good under that hood, but its not mine, thats why I got me a G-body witha big block.
And ur so right, sorry bout saying all 3rd gens are the same, thats like saying all big blocks are the same-DOH!

Hooker 2055 headers run about $350 for the set, the hooker aerochamber is about $150, then just the shop cost for the 3" catback and high-flow cat.
Active Duty here, so I know all about trying to do it on the cheap. lol
