Distributor Help - now at shop

So I posted two other threads about issues with this car - which were numerous. After dumping $1000 into this car in just over a month, I threw in the towel and took it to a shop locally. After asking around a few shops others told me this is the place to have the work done.
For $90 he would diagnose the issues still left which are not as easy as it sounds because I see a lot of people on the forum with similar issues. Running rough, timing out, Idle bad and we all know the rest.
After being there two days now, he called me. I need new distributor, injectors, plugs, wires, cap rotor and TPS adjusted.

The guy who owns the shop told me that about 10 years ago he used to buy and sell these cars (Camaros and Birds) and sell them after fixing the mechanical issues. He has bought and sold close to 100. Usually WS6 of TPI cars.

He told me the rate to do all the labor and I could just buy the parts to save some coin. Bought injectors from southbay injectors and they are on their way. Already had new wires, cap and rotor and wires here in the box the guy likes all AC Delco though so I have to exchange a couple items.

THE DELEMIA: I brought him in a distributor today - looked at it and said, "can you find a new one and not remanufactured?" He told me that the Modules in the reman dist. were junk. I took it back to the store and asked for a new one. The parts stores don't have new, AC Delco doesn't make new. So I asked for a Accel, Mallory or MSD. The only one in stock was an Accel. The one had built in coil and Vacuum secondary - it also eliminates computer control, the other has module but vacuum secondary however does not have the same connectors as the remanufactured plugs.

What is everyone else using? I want to keep this car as stock as possible and splicing into wires is not what I wanted to do. Are the remanufactured modules junk? I do think this guy knows what he is talking about. He said the module is bad and my distributor has magnetized.

Any help? Accel part number I found is 60109 that looks pretty correct... This is a stock 5.7 and I do have the TPI cap on it now for a taller distributor, so I do want to put back on the correct stock TPI part over distributor area. While the guy is at it, I would like a new coil put on too. I am not the only driver and want to make sure my gal doesn't break down because of cheap inferior parts.

Thank you for sending links. I do appreciate the effort and this gives me plenty of choices to decide on what is best for me.

Re: Distributor Help - now at shop

Avoid any Accel electronics. I blew through 3 of their ignition modules over a 9 month period a couple of years ago. I have an Accel Supercoil on my HEI, so I wanted to go with an aftermarket module to match. After the last one failed I got a Borg Warner module and it's been fine ever since. Borg warner module was like $20 vs $50 for the Accel garbage.

Now you aren't running the large cap HEI like I am, so things are a little different, but I would run the distributor you have if you can get a decent ignition module for it. I dont see why he thinks you should get a whole new distributor when you already have your original one, and now another reman one. Between the two of those if you got a new ignition module from a good brand I don't see how you could go wrong with the reman one.

Re: Distributor Help - now at shop

The Summit distributor will work fine. Really, any of them should.

Word of advice- replace the distributor FIRST and see what kind of improvement you see. A stock replacent coil is cheap and should be replaced if you're doing the distributor. Those things alone might make a world of difference (assuming you've already changed out the basic tune-up parts like cap, rotors, plugs and wires).

Remember the old mechanic's rule: Replace one thing at a time. If you do more than one thing you don't know which part was responsible for the change.

If you're lucky your problem will be just ignition-related. Changing injectors on a TPI is kind of a PITA.

Re: Distributor Help - now at shop

I have already changed quite a bit but I am pretty sure this will resolve a lot of issues. I appreicate the advice and will stay away form the Accel. Jegs makes a CNC'd as well as Summit. I might but that one and add the Delco Modulator. The injectors - I will just get done because the car has 79,500 and I have head original injectors can cause issues later.
We just want it running right so we can park it in the garage for the winter.... ha ha.
